Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on February 9 that he stays away from the kind of politics where the country’s coffer is emptied for extra votes because he wishes to secure the future of the coming generation.

“I want to secure the future of the coming generation before leaving. I stay away from politics where the government’s coffer is emptied for four extra votes. Therefore, in our decisions, we gave fiscal discipline paramount importance in our policies and decisions,” PM Modi said while addressing the ET Now Global Business Summit 2024.

“…the approach of certain parties towards electricity is such that it can lead to the destruction of the electricity system of the country. My approach is different…,” he added.

In a tangent attack on the Opposition, Modi said, earlier, the debates to bring formulas to remove poverty were done in AC rooms; but the poor stayed poor. “After 2014, the industry that dined on wine and cheese and gave advice on how to alleviate poverty was shut down. When the son of a poor man became the prime minister, the industry that was running in the name of poverty was toppled. I rose from poverty and became Prime Minister, so I know how to fight poverty. In the last 10 years, 25 crore people have been lifted from poverty,” he added.

Speaking about the work accomplished by his government in the past decade, the Prime Minister said: “There are many sectors in which the work done in the last 10 years has been more than in the previous 70 years. In the seven decades until 2014, around 20,000 kilometres of rail lines had been electrified. In 10 years, this government has electrified more than 40,000 kilometres of rail lines. Now tell me, is there any competition? I am not talking about May (upcoming general elections).”

“In the last 10 years, 25 crore people escaped poverty. This shows that the policies of our govt are right and our direction is right. By moving in this direction, we will reduce the poverty of the country and will make it developed. Our governance model is moving forward on two streams simultaneously. On the one hand, we are also addressing the challenges we inherited from the 20th century. On the other hand, we are also busy in fulfilling the aspirations of the 21st century…we faced bigger challenges and achieved bigger goals…,” Modi further said.

He added, “Our growth rate is continuously rising and fiscal deficit is falling. Our exports are increasing and current account deficit is falling,” and said, “A virtuous cycle has begun for India.”
