An agreement was recently inked at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) to enhance collaboration between the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Department of Biotechnology and the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). The goal of this memorandum of understanding (MOU) is to strengthen research collaboration and collaborations.

This agreement was forma lized at the AFMC campus, with the honorable presence of Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Mr. Jitendra Singh. In addition to facilitating research collaborations, the MOU also outlines plans for faculty exchange programs to enhance scientific cooperation between the two organizations.
The signing of this MOU coincides with the medical college’s year-long platinum jubilee festivities. Minister Jitendra Singh established the Association of Physicians of India (API) chapter of the AFMC in Pune during the ceremony. He also kicked off the first annual API-AFMS Continuing Medical Education (CME) meeting, which focused on developing trends in medical practice.

Singh underscored the historical significance of AFMC, Pune, as one of the first central medical education institutes, established even before AIIMS, Delhi. He noted that the concept of a dedicated AFMC was championed by Dr. BC Roy, a pioneering physician credited with nurturing API.

The collaboration between API and AFMC holds historical value, paying homage to the legacy of Dr. BC Roy. Minister Singh emphasized that the era of working in isolation is over, and the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is committed to integrating various government organs, ministries, departments, educational institutions, and industry players, especially in the healthcare sector.

Preventive healthcare and widespread mass screening are essential steps for India to progress towards becoming a developed economy. India’s successful handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the administration of over 220 crore vaccinations through the COWIN digital platform, received international recognition.

Minister Singh highlighted India’s rapid progress in biotechnology under PM Modi’s leadership, with the country producing two DNA vaccines and a nasal vaccine in just two years. He noted the evolving landscape of diseases over the past half-century, including the rise of lifestyle diseases like coronary ailments, coinciding with increased life expectancy, which now approaches 70 years.

The MOU is expected to pave the way for groundbreaking research in fields like genomics, which have direct implications for both lifestyle diseases and emerging conditions such as malignant cancer. Minister Singh emphasized that biotechnology will play a pivotal role in India’s economic growth and position the country as a leading player on the global stage. In recent years, India has made significant strides in biotechnology, with the number of biotech startups growing from 52 in 2014 to over 6,000 today.

Dr. Rajesh S Gokhale, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, also shared insights during the event. He mentioned that phase-three trials for a Dengue vaccine are currently underway, with a strong emphasis on ensuring safety and careful study of potential antibody enhancement.

In conclusion, this collaboration between the Department of Biotechnology and the Armed Forces Medical Services represents a significant step forward in advancing scientific research and healthcare in India, with a particular focus on biotechnology’s promising future.
