Roblox Eyes Users Aged 17-Plus With More Responsible TikTok-like Metaverse Experiences – NFTgators

Date:

Quick take:

  • Roblox is introducing new experiences for users aged 17 years and above.
  • The Social metaverse gaming platform wants to tie down its biggest demographic of users to the platform.
  • The new content shift heralds a more responsible TikTok-like content offering on the platform.

Roblox is introducing more mature content on its platform. The Metaverse gaming company announced Tuesday that it wants to add more experiences suited to those aged 17 years or older.

The platform has been popular among the younger demographic of users, who could find it less exciting as they grow older. In the document announcing the new content plans, Roblox said users aged 17-24 years accounted for about 38% of its daily active users in 2022.

“The fastest-growing age group on Roblox is 17-to-24-year-olds and in 2022, 38% of our daily active users were 17 and over. As a natural evolution, we’re now allowing creators to make content specifically for this audience,” the company wrote in a blog post.

Roblox does not specify a minimum age, thus allowing users of all ages to create and join groups, chat, and interact with others.

“Until now, we have allowed experiences for the following age groups — All Ages, 9 and older, and 13 and older. Today, we’re expanding our guidelines to include Ages 17 and older,” the statement read.

Its introduction of a more mature content offering will require more checks and balances to be put in place to ensure no drifts into content sections beyond their age limit.

Roblox is a social gaming platform whose ability to support content creation and interactions between users draws some similarities to top entertainment platforms like Twitch and TikTok.

However, unlike those platforms, Roblox seems to be taking a more responsible approach to providing mature content users with its “age-appropriate” controls. This feature allows family members of different age groups to experience different things while attending the same event, with some limits placed on experiences created for a mature audience.

“For example, when a family attends a sporting event, there’s something at the stadium for everyone to do. But some of these areas may be off-limits for young people. As they get older, though, they’ll be able to access those areas, and we want to replicate that dynamic on Roblox.”

In classifying mature content themes and storylines, Roblox gives an example of experiences that may contain “intense violence, heavy realistic blood, moderate crude humour, romantic themes, unplayable gambling content and/or the presence of alcohol.”

The company also requires content for those aged 17 and above to standards of safety and civility, adding that users can “only create or consume these experiences if they’re verified as 17 or older.” Parents will also have the tools to restrict their children’s access to certain experiences.

While TikTok has 13 years set as the required minimum age to use the platform, it has no tools or mechanisms that require users to prove their age when registering an account.

In a similar move to Roblox, Twitch seems to be rethinking its approach to mature content offerings after introducing content labels for streams with sexual themes, gambling and M-rated games.

On Tuesday, the company said it will require streamers to signal when their channels contain sexual themes, graphic violence, “drugs, intoxication, or excessive tobacco use,” gambling or “significant” profanity or vulgarity.
