NIA Updates Resources on Advanced Nuclear Technologies

In July 2023, the Nuclear Innovation Alliance (NIA) released two new Deployment Maps that showcase scheduled deployments of North American advanced reactors design across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia.

Alongside the release of the two Deployment Maps, NIA also release updates of their “Advanced Nuclear Reactor Technology: A Company Compendium” and their “Advanced Nuclear Reactor Technology: A Primer.”  (Scroll down for summary text and links)

These releases were accompanied by a Zoom media briefing event (YouTube video below). The NIA’s new and updated reports provide information, resources and insights into advanced nuclear technology innovation and commercialization. They should serve as resources for investors, reporters, policymakers, regulators and others who want to learn more about advanced nuclear technologies and the key players building this industry.

NIA Advanced Reactor Reports

The Nuclear Innovation Alliance (NIA) has published a primer on advanced nuclear reactor technologies.  This primer provides basic information on advanced reactors to help the public and stakeholders understand the promise of innovative nuclear technologies. Dozens are under development around the world; this primer focuses on those in the United States and Canada. The PDF file is available for free by downloading it from the organization’s website. ( updated July 2023)

NIA has published a compendium of the major developers of advanced nuclear reactors. This compendium highlights major advanced reactor developers and their current development and deployment status, and documents public agreements between advanced reactor companies and outside parties including the private sector, government, universities, and international organizations.

The compendium is a broad summary of the advanced reactor business ecosystem and provides insight into what companies are associated with the planning, design, testing, construction, and operation of advanced nuclear energy projects. (updated July 2023)

Multiple advanced reactor developers have announced domestic demonstration projects to be built in the 2020s. These nuclear reactors will provide the licensing, construction, and operational basis for rapid commercial expansion of advanced nuclear energy in the late 2020s and early 2030s.

Technology, business, and regulatory lessons learned from first-of-a-kind (FOAK) projects will facilitate lower costs and shorter construction timelines for subsequent nth-of-a-kind (NOAK) reactors due to wide-scale deployment and technological learning.

Utilities and other customers that gain early experience with FOAK or early NOAK projects will be in competitive positions to become technology leaders.
