Motor Health at Risk: How to Choose the Right Oil

Date:

Good synthetic oil, compared to semi-synthetics, bought in a trusted store, can double or even triple the time between oil changes, but, of course, not everything is so simple. The Indy Auto Man mechanics explain how to choose motor oil to prolong a vehicle’s life. They also offer a car maintenance scheduler on indyautoman.com

Basic rules for choosing

The freedom to choose engine oil directly depends on how boosted the engine is. The current trend to put high-powered small-volume turbo engines on ordinary crossovers and even SUVs implies not only the use of the most advanced oil in them but also regular maintenance with its replacement. In terms of progress, this may even be good – a more economical engine of less weight allows you to extend the life of the suspension and units, has fewer emissions, and is preferable from a tax point of view. However, by attaching a 1.4-liter engine to a two-ton car, the manufacturer implies that its operation will be within strict limits, and going beyond them is fraught with rapid wear of the power unit or its breakdown. This applies not only to overloads, such as long slips or trips with a heavy trailer but also to the exact observance of tolerances and restrictions on the part of the refueling fluids: oil, antifreeze, etc.

What the choice of oil depends on

So how much the owner of this or that crossover is free to deviate from factory recommendations in choosing oil? If a car has an ultra-modern highly accelerated engine (100 hp from one liter of working volume or more), then the owner is a hostage of factory restrictions. This also applies to viscosity tolerances and the brand of the manufacturer. In highly accelerated engines, friction pairs are often found from exclusive materials, to which a manufacturer of a particular oil selects strictly individual additives. Alas, this is the fee for power per liter of volume.

Moreover, it is not recommended to roll the mileage between oil changes. Even ordinary, non-specific modern oils have numerous additives – anti-foaming, detergent, stabilizing, antioxidant, etc. All of them can work only within the allotted time, and after it, they degrade, leaving only a synthetic base in the engine. This, of course, will not allow the motor to jam, but it will not add a resource either.

Oil Changes in Figures

Today most engines have a mileage between maintenance of six thousand miles. This period can be stretched but not more than a thousand or two. There are motors with an interservice mileage of nine thousand miles, but the guidelines often indicate that this is only in the gentle operation mode. Drivers who tow a trailer, prefer dynamic starts and high speeds and should plan to replace one and a half times more often. At the same time, in the states with a moderate climate, numbers of twelve thousand miles are not uncommon. But low temperatures, like in Indiana, make strict adjustments to the interservice mileage.

But a vehicle has an old-series engine, that is, not too forced and without turbines, and even more so if it has a cast-iron crankcase, then the owner can experiment with different oils, not forgetting to check with the factory tolerances before that. However, the choice here is simple. Those who want to save money and fill the engine with semi-synthetics should reduce the mileage between replacement to five thousand. At the same time, it is worth calculating the savings, if any, from such a replacement compared to buying good synthetics and a mileage of ten thousand.

Driving style

The most intensive mode of the motor is many hours of driving in traffic jams. In this sense, the most modern engines are preferable. Engineers have already put in them a start-stop mode, first of all, setting up a cooling system with temperature control and a lubrication system. They are critically interconnected, and despite the high degree of force, the advanced motors tolerate city traffic better than the old ones.

The conclusion is simple: if the trips are associated with daily traffic jams, use only good synthetics because the savings will come out sideways. If driving on the highway without city traffic jams, the engine is less loaded, it is possible to save a little on the cost of oil. Within reasonable limits, of course. The oil change for a car that does not suffer from traffic jams can be slightly delayed. On synthetic oil, with quiet operation, a normal motor can travel seven to nine thousand, or even more, without compromising the resource.

Although professional auto mechanics (both before and now) recommend not skimping on engine oil and forking out for average-priced synthetics.

Oil for older vehicles

High-mileage old engines, like in the American V8 SUVs, are also dependable on the driving style. In a calm driving mode, such motors perfectly digested the ancient mineral water, which is simply not produced now. Therefore, it is possible to pour semi-synthetics, but only if there is no critical wear, for example, hydraulic lifters. However, one should not think that multi-cylinder engines come from the 1990s – this is something like domestic cargo eights. For example, the Vortec 5.7 from GM is very demanding on the quality of the oil, and it is better to fill it with quality synthetics.

How to choose the manufacturer

As for the choice of manufacturer – it’s more or less the same. Almost all modern oils, if not identical in a set of additives, are very close. They are similar in terms of tolerances, and here it is more important not to adhere to the brand but to be sure that it is not a fake. For this reason, many owners of not-too-new cars change the oil at reliable service stations with proven reputations, like Indy Auto Man in Indianapolis – there is no risk of running into something of bad quality.
