The $1.82m sale price of a 1920s Malvern bungalow will help a local charity following the property’s auction at the weekend.

About a dozen househunters registered to bid on the character home at 13 Eton St – the entire sale price of which will be donated to The Salvation Army’s SA branch.

The deceased owner, Roger, bequeathed the house he once called home with his late wife Margaret to The Salvos.

Selling agent James Robertson, of Ouwens Casserly Real Estate, said the property’s executor instructed them to auction it, with the sale proceeds to be donated to the charity.

He said there was a huge turn out to see it go under the hammer, with five of the registered bidders making at least one offer.

“It was a really good showing, in terms of a lot of people being there – I reckon there was about 100 to 150 people there,” said Mr Robertson, who sold the property with Nic Pernini.

“I think a lot of people did come out because of the story and background around it.

“Bidding started at $900,000 and went up in $100,000 increments up to $1.6m.”

He said it was a battle between two bidders after that until the hammer came down at $1.82m.

“It was a couple very keen to move in who bought it,” he said.

“It was a great send off, I think Roger would have been pleased that we were able to get what we got.”

Mr Robertson said it was a very generous donation on Roger’s part, especially since he also left a significant amount of cash for The Salvos in his will.

The Salvation Army regional team leader of gifts and wills John Tobin said they were grateful for the donation, which was much larger than they anticipated.

“It was $300,000 above what was being sought so we’re absolutely delighted,” he said.

Mr Tobin said the money would go towards major projects where there was greatest need, including helping the homeless and people experiencing domestic violence.

He said gifts in wills, no matter how big or small, were life changing for those in the community in desperate need.

“A gift in a will, more generally speaking, can make such an impactful difference,” he said.
