IEM Fall NA: 3 Major spots left, 9 teams in the running

Date:

One last round of the group stage is left to be played at IEM Fall North America, where only three teams’ fate is sealed: Liquid and FURIA have already clinched their spots at PGL Major Stockholm by advancing to the playoffs, while ATK are entirely out of contention with no RMR points to their name and no chance to make it to the top three in their group.

Beating Triumph would guarantee GODSENT a Major spot

The rest of it is all up in the air. Three more Major spots are on the line in the North American standings, and any one of nine teams could claim one if things go their way. Some of these nine teams have their fate in their hands, while others rely on other results either in part or completely.

Let’s then look at how things stand at the moment and what each team needs to do in order to qualify for the Stockholm Major, held at the end of October.

Keep in mind that the top two teams from each group make it to playoffs and guarantee themselves RMR points, while the two teams who place 3rd in their groups will play a 5th place decider for points as well.

Qualified
1. United States Liquid – 3,871+ points (guaranteed Legends)
2. Brazil FURIA – 3,615+ points

In the running for remaining 3 spots
3. Oceania EXTREMUM – 1,880+ points
4. North America Evil Geniuses – 1,310+ points
5. Brazil 00Nation – 1,300 points
6. North America Extra Salt – 1,200+ points
7. Brazil paiN – 1,100+ points
8. United States Bad News Bears – 570+ points
9-12. Brazil GODSENT – 0+ points
9-12. United States Triumph – 0+ points (to incur a 36% deduction)
9-12. Brazil TeamOne – 0+ points

Eliminated from contention
9-12. South Africa ATK – 0 points

Group A

Group A is about as close as it can get. Liquid are safely through to playoffs from first place and four teams are tied at 2-2 ahead of the final round, which leaves us with a lot of different scenarios that can play out for the second playoffs spot and third place in the group.

Current standings
1. United States Liquid (4-0) – Through to playoffs
2-5. Oceania EXTREMUM (2-2)
2-5. United States Bad News Bears (2-2)
2-5. Brazil paiN (2-2)
2-5. North America Extra Salt (2-2)
6. South Africa ATK (0-4) – Out of top 3 contention

Final matches
00:15 United States Liquid vs. North America Extra Salt
00:15 Oceania EXTREMUM vs. United States Bad News Bears
00:15 Brazil paiN vs. South Africa ATK

EXTREMUM

— EXTREMUM beating BNB would see them either finish 2nd outright (if ATK win) or 3rd (if paiN and Liquid win) or play rematches for 2nd-4th place with Extra Salt and paiN (if paiN and Extra Salt win)

— Losing to BNB would see them eliminated in bottom three in every case but one, where they would play rematches for 3rd-5th place with Extra Salt and paiN (if Liquid and ATK win)

— Need at least a top 5 finish overall at the event to guarantee a Major spot, or other results to go their way otherwise: a 0-point team (GODSENT, TeamOne, Triumph) finishing 5th or Triumph finishing 1st-5th

Extra Salt

— Extra Salt beating Liquid would see them either finish 3rd (if ATK win) or play rematches for 2nd-4th place with paiN and EXTREMUM/BNB (if paiN win)

— Losing to Liquid puts them either out of contention in the bottom three (if paiN win) or in rematches with paiN and EXTREMUM/BNB (if ATK win)

— Need a top 5 finish overall at the event to guarantee a Major spot, top 6 or worse eliminates them from contention

paiN

— paiN beating ATK would see them either finish 2nd and go to playoffs (if Liquid win) or play rematches for 2nd-4th place with Extra Salt and BNB/EXTREMUM (if Extra Salt win)

— Losing to ATK would see them either finish outside of the top 3 (if Extra Salt win) or play rematches for 3rd-5th place with Extra Salt and BNB/EXTREMUM (if Liquid win)

— Need a top 5 finish overall at the event to guarantee a Major spot, top 6 or worse eliminates them from contention

Bad News Bears

— BNB beating EXTREMUM would see them either finish 2nd and go to playoffs (if ATK win) or place 3rd (if Liquid and paiN win) or play rematches for 2nd-4th (if Extra Salt and paiN win)

— Losing to EXTREMUM would see them either place outside of the top 3 (if Liquid and paiN win or if Extra Salt and ATK win) or play rematches for 3rd-5th place with Extra Salt and EXTREMUM/BNB (if Liquid and ATK win or if Extra Salt and paiN win)

— Need a top 5 finish overall at the event to guarantee a Major spot, top 6 or worse eliminates them from contention

Group B

In comparison, Group B is a little simpler but on the other hand still has all five teams below FURIA in the running for a Major spot and a tricky component in Triumph, who will incur a 36% points deduction due to making two separate player substitutions during the event.

Current standings
1. Brazil FURIA (4-0) – Through to playoffs
2. Brazil GODSENT (3-1)
3-4. United States Triumph (2-2)
3-4. North America Evil Geniuses (2-2)
5. Brazil TeamOne (1-3)
6. Brazil 00Nation (0-4) – Out of top 3 contention

Final matches
01:30 North America Evil Geniuses vs. Brazil FURIA
01:30 Brazil 00Nation vs. Brazil TeamOne
01:30 Brazil GODSENT vs. United States Triumph

Evil Geniuses

— EG beating FURIA would see them either finish 3rd (if GODSENT win) or play rematches for 2nd-4th place with GODSENT and Triumph (if Triumph win)

— Losing to FURIA would see them either finish 3rd (if GODSENT and 00Nation win), play rematches for 3rd-5th place with TeamOne and Triumph (if GODSENT and TeamOne win), or finish outside of the top 3 (if Triumph win)

— Need at least a top 5 finish at the event to guarantee a spot, or other results to go their way: Triumph to place 4th-5th overall and not more than one other team below them in RMR standings placing top 5

GODSENT

— GODSENT beating Triumph would see them finish 2nd and move on to playoffs in every scenario

— Losing to Triumph would see them finish 3rd (if FURIA win) or play rematches for 2nd-4th place with EG and Triumph (if EG win)

— Need at least a top 4 finish at the event to guarantee a Major spot, or top 5 and at least one of EXTREMUM or Triumph placing top 4

Triumph

— Triumph beating GODSENT would see them either finish 2nd (if FURIA win) or play rematches for 2nd-4th place with EG and Triumph (if EG win)

— Losing to GODSENT would see Triumph eliminated in bottom three in all cases but one, in which they would play rematches with EG and TeamOne for 3rd-5th place (if FURIA and TeamOne win)

— Due to their 36% points penalty, Triumph need at least a top 3 finish at the event and EXTREMUM to finish top 5 to guarantee a Major spot, otherwise they’d be out of contention

TeamOne

— Only one way can see TeamOne finish 3rd in the group: If they beat 00Nation, GODSENT beats Triumph, and FURIA beats EG, and then TeamOne win rematches against EG and Triumph for 3rd place

— Need a top 5 finish at the event to have a chance to qualify for the Major, and they then need EXTREMUM to finish top 4 to guarantee a spot

00Nation

— Cannot earn points at IEM Fall anymore, but they could remain in 5th place of the RMR standings and guarantee a Major spot if EXTREMUM, EG, and Triumph all place in the top 5 and Triumph finishes top 4 at best
