How to care for your cows in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life

Date:

In this remake of the 2003 Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, taking good care of your farm is tough work. Not only do you have to grow healthy crops, but make sure your animals are happy too. If they aren’t, they won’t produce valuable animal products to sell and make money. If you’re struggling with taking care of your cows in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, we’ll teach you how to do so.

How to keep cows happy in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life

The first animal you get for free at the beginning of this farming simulator is a cow. Although she’s ready to produce Milk, from each day forward you’ll need to make sure you keep that cow happy. Once you purchase more cows, caring for them will be even more difficult. How you care for your cows in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life takes a few different steps.

Cow Fodder

Feed cows Fodder or Fodder+

While normal Fodder is still good for cows, Fodder+ is even better. The only downside is that it costs 50 Gold instead of 20 like normal Fodder. I highly recommend you splurge and give your cows the good food. They’re quite hungry, and will finish one trough off in a day. Since there are two troughs, fill both everyday, and one cow will end up eating both for breakfast and dinner. The better the Fodder, the better grade your Milk will be.

Keep cows clean

Once you’re able to buy a Brush, you’ll need to keep your cows free of dirt and grime. After a few days, you’ll notice that your cows will become dirty, meaning they need a good Brush. But where can you buy a Brush? Whenever Van, the travelling merchant, comes to town, save up 1,000 Gold to buy a Brush. Don’t ask me why a tiny Brush costs that much, the economy in this town is strange at times.

You’ll have to wait until you notice brown splotches of dirt on your cows to Brush them. Holding your Brush, press the ‘E’ key to clean them off, which will make them quite content. A clean cow is a happy cow.

Let your cows graze outside

If your cows are kept inside the barn all day, they won’t get enough sunshine. This will make them produce low-grade Milk, so make sure to call them outside. Just go into the field, and ring the yellow bell to let them out. I usually deal with my crops, give them time to eat Fodder, then let them out for the day before I head around town. Then, in the evening, I’ll call them back inside.

The only time you shouldn’t let your cows outside is if it’s raining. When that happens, just keep them inside, since they prefer it over being soaked by the rain. Just don’t forget them outside at night! If you’re worried that they won’t have time to eat, they’ll actually eat the tall grass in your pasture when outside. You can actually use your Sickle to cut the grass and create Fodder, if you’re low on it.

Give ’em a nice snuggle

Cows can get lonely too! If you walk up to your cow, press the ‘E’ key and you can Snuggle it. They’ll respond with a heart, meaning they enjoyed that time with you. You can even press the ‘Enter’ key to Talk with it. The game will then tell you if they’re happy or not, clueing you into their mood. I usually Snuggle them at least twice a day.
