Tena koutou katoa e maumahara ana ki te ra o Waitangi.
Greetings to you all as we celebrate Waitangi day.
The photo here is of me when I had the privilege of participating in the Waitangi Day celebrations at Waitangi four years ago – an experience I’ll treasure for years to come.
It seems to me that the significance of Waitangi Day is growing for all New Zealanders, and provides the ideal opportunity, at the beginning of the school year, to assess just how well your school is doing in terms of being a Treaty honouring organisation and being culturally responsive. Let’s see if 2023 can be ‘that year’ for your community. |

Cultural Capability for Educators
It’s been four years now since I stepped back from my role with CORE Education, but the team there continue to do an outstanding job contributing to the growth and development of educators in the cultural capability space. They have amassed an awesome collection of resources and learning opportunities that you can access as an individual or as a whole school staff. Check out their cultural capability resources here. |

Women and Girls in Science
Friday 11 February is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science! What a great opportunity to promote science and technology with your students. This International Day not only commemorates the important role of women in science and research but also points out that the global representation of women in science is still low. Perhaps you could mark it with student activities about the 14 profiles of Māori female scientists available in these great resources from the New Zealand Association of Science Educators. |

What’s driving change in our schools and education system? Have your say here. There’s still an opportunity to contribute to the survey on roadblocks and drivers of change in education which closes off on 10 February. Please distribute this link to your staff, board of trustees members and/or parents and community and invite them to contribute their thoughts in response to the two questions asked. |
