Inspiration often appears when you least expect it.

Just ask SA artist Will Hendricks who created one of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s most unusual homes after stumbling across a nautilus seashell at his local beach.

Mr Hendricks, who famously designed Camp Dzintari in Normanville, said it took almost three-and-a-half years to complete the 1974-built hilltop home at 6 Bower Rd, Yankalilla, with its unique design resulting in a number of raised eyebrows at the time.

“When I first started building it, the local council at the time were absolutely horrified,” he said.

“They had never seen anything like it but I’m an artist and I like unusual homes and the shape of the nautilus seashell fitted well with the hills landscape.

“It’s been designed so that strong winds blast the glass on top so you actually never have to clean them but the shape itself also protects the rest of the house.”

Mr Hendricks said his family enjoyed the property for well over a decade but sold the home in 1984.

The property has again been listed for sale, with its first open inspection on Thursday expected to draw a sizable crowd, according to selling agent Chris Cotton of Harcourts Wine Coast.

He said the home had been listed with a price guide of $1.5m to $1.6m.

“I think the home will appeal to families,” Mr Cotton said.

“The current owners have five girls and loved living here and are only selling as they are looking to downsize.

“However, a portion of the property could also be a great Airbnb, as the home comes with a self-contained area down the bottom, complete with a kitchen, an office and a bedroom, so someone could make a bit of an income there.”

Situated on 2.02ha, the two-level home has been meticulously cared for over the past five decades.

It encompasses five bedrooms, three bathrooms, multiple living zones and a good-sized kitchen with ample storage space.

The formal dining room seamlessly flows into the living zone, creating the perfect space for family gatherings and entertaining guests.

Meanwhile, a self-contained downstairs unit makes for the perfect teenage or guest retreat, while outside a large undercover entertainment area is ideal for long summer evenings.

The property also comes with a pool, parking for 10 cars and landscaped gardens.

Best offers are due by 5pm on November 15.
