“Folio Photonics will help users balance cost-effectiveness, data protection, and accessibility by providing a next-generation data storage media that radically reduces upfront cost and total cost of ownership while making data archives active, cybersecure, and sustainable.” ~ Steve Santamaria, CEO

Folio Photonics today announced it has been selected as a winner in the 2023 Data Breakthrough Awards program, taking home the “Data Center Innovation of the Year” award. Folio Photonics was recognized for reenergizing storage media with the first-ever enterprise-grade optical storage solution that delivers breakthrough cost, security, and sustainability benefits.

The 2023 Data Breakthrough Awards program is notable because it recognizes and celebrates companies that have made significant advancements and innovations in the field of data technology. Winning the “Data Center Innovation of the Year” award highlights the impact and significance of Folio Photonics’ long-term storage solution in the industry. This recognition not only validates the attractiveness and competitiveness of Folio Photonics’ technology but also positions the company as a leader in the field of data storage and management.

Folio Photonics uses innovative materials paired with a proprietary application of a well-known manufacturing process to produce a film with many thin storage layers and high areal densities, which effectively eliminates the common issues typically found in traditional optical storage media like DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. Nanophotonic materials are embedded into multi-layer films via a highly scalable, efficient co-extrusion manufacturing process, enabling Folio to achieve record-low media costs. Discs are the first application of Folio’s multi-layered film — providing random and rapid access to data across many layers. Data is written and accessed through a proprietary drive with a novel confocal optical pickup unit to track through layers at high spin speeds. All of this is achievable while still maintaining a robust range of operating conditions and a long media lifetime.

“As data continues to grow exponentially, organizations face increasing challenges in managing, protecting, and leveraging it over the long-term while staying within budget. The need to balance cost-effectiveness and accessibility has become a critical issue as organizations strive to ensure the integrity of their digital assets while still being able to extract value from them,” said Steve Santamaria, CEO, Folio Photonics. “Folio Photonics will help users balance cost-effectiveness, data protection, and accessibility by providing a next-generation data storage media that radically reduces upfront cost and total cost of ownership while making data archives active, cybersecure, and sustainable. With Folio’s technology, organizations can protect their digital assets, reduce the risk of data loss, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, all while maintaining their competitive edge.”

Santamaria concluded, “We are thrilled to be the recipient of a prestigious Data Breakthrough Award, as it is an enviable seal of approval, as well as a validation of Folio Photonics’ optical technology’s potential to transform the industry.”
