Embraer, a renowned leader in the aerospace industry, has announced a significant milestone in its E-99M program, delivering the fifth EMB 145 AEW&C aircraft, now upgraded and designated as E-99M, to the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). This aircraft, delivered in a Full Operational Capability (FOC) configuration, is equipped with cutting-edge technology for Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) missions, as well as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations.
Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, emphasized the importance of this delivery: “The handover of the fifth E-99 is a pivotal moment for the E-99M project. This is the first aircraft delivered in an FOC configuration, with systems fully certified for use by the Brazilian Air Force to safeguard the country and its national sovereignty.” Da Costa Junior further stated that the four previously delivered aircraft would also be upgraded to fully perform all the designed missions.
Built upon the successful ERJ 145 regional jet platform, the FAB’s E-99M is adept at detecting, tracking, and identifying targets within its coverage area and transmitting information via Data Link. The aircraft is tasked with airspace surveillance, interception control and management, electronic intelligence, and border monitoring missions.
The E-99M now features an upgraded Erieye Radar and Command & Control (C2) systems. Enhancements include a new Electronic Warfare (Non-Communication – NCOM) system, a new IFF Transponder, seven software-defined V/UHF radios, a modernized Mission Audio system with VoIP technology, and a new Mission Audio and Data recorder. Additionally, the Data Link function has been adapted to a new architecture. The aircraft’s interior has also been updated, enhancing crew comfort and expanding operational capacity with five redesigned consoles for more efficient utilization of the upgraded systems.
The E-99M project is spearheaded by the Combat Aircraft Program Coordinating Committee (COPAC), in collaboration with Embraer and international suppliers such as SAAB, Aeroelectronica International (AELI), and Rohde & Schwarz. Atech, an Embraer subsidiary, contributes to the project by developing parts of the command-and-control system and six mission planning and analysis stations, providing training and development opportunities for the crews.
The EMB 145 AEW&C is also operated by the air forces of India, Mexico, and Greece, highlighting its global operational footprint.
