EasyJet adds extra capacity on flights from Portugal

Date:

EasyJet has announced that it will be adding “over 1000 additional seats” for any customer or passenger who would like to return home early following the UK Government’s controversial decision to add Portugal to the country’s Amber list. Passengers entering England from Portugal from 4am on Tuesday, June 8th will be required to quarantine at home for a period of 10 days

Over the course of Saturday 5th and Monday 7th, the UK-based airline will be adding extra services on routes from Faro Airport (FAO) in Portugal to London Gatwick (LGW), London Luton (LTN), Bristol (BRS) and Manchester (MAN).

EasyJet added that it is “already offering some of the most flexible policies” and stated that any easyJet customers can “change their flights this summer without a change fee, at any time up to two hours before departure.” Therefore this might be an appealing opportunity for some UK passengers who may wish to travel home without having to self-quarantine on arrival from Tuesday, June 8th.

The news that the UK carrier will be adding extra flights comes just a day after the Chief Executive of easyJet, Johan Lundgren said “the UK government is making it impossible for airlines to plan while consumers are left grounded in the UK.”

In a statement seen by AeroNewsX, Mr Lundgren stated, “This shock decision to add Portugal to the Amber list is a huge blow to those who are currently in Portugal and those who have booked to be reunited with loved ones, or take a well-deserved break this summer. With Portuguese rates similar to those in the UK it simply isn’t justified by the science.”

During an announcement earlier this week, the UK Government added no new countries to the Green list. The CEO of easyJet stated that “the government has torn up its own rule book and ignored the science.” The Chief Executive went on to highlight that Europe’s infection rates are on a downward trend citing areas such as the Balearics and Malta which both have lower infection rates than that of the United Kingdom. It remains to be seen which countries will be added and remain on the UK’s international travel green list over the course of the summer season.
