Connexin has secured the largest smart water metering contract in the UK to date, winning a deal with Essex & Suffolk Water to supply up to one million smart water meters across Essex and Suffolk by 2035.

The deal will see Connexin install wireless network infrastructure and provide Itron smart water meters to Essex & Suffolk Water over the next 11 years. The meters will enable remote, real-time monitoring of household and business water usage.

Connexin will install 164,000 smart meters by end-2025, with the number rising to 612,000 by 2030. The contract has a minimum term of five years and can be extended by a further 10 years. When complete, the project will create a network of up to one million smart meters.

For Essex & Suffolk Water, a key driver is meeting regulatory and environmental targets around reducing per capita water consumption and leakage. The granular usage data from smart meters will allow quicker detection of customer-side leaks. Hourly consumption readings will also help customers understand and reduce their usage.

Gary Adams, Head of Essex & Suffolk Water’s Smart Transformation Programme, said remote meter readings would shape understanding of regional water usage and ensure supplies are protected “for the future.”

For Connexin, the deal cements their position as a leader in smart water solutions. Dan Preece, Connexin’s Vice President of Water & Utilities said it showed their commitment to building “a more connected, efficient, and responsible world.”

The contract award comes ahead of Asset Management Period 8 (AMP8), which commences on 1 April 2025. AMP8 is expected to drive water industry commitments around climate change, customer service, society, and the environment.
