Candidate J.D. Maddox Proposes One-Percent Cap on Homeowner Property…

Date:

“The average Alexandria homeowner pays about $800 in taxes and that cost will only go up as home prices increase. Home ownership is crucial to building strong communities, and high property taxes push working families away from the state.”

Virginia House of Delegates candidate J.D. Maddox, whose 45th District includes eastern Alexandria and parts of Arlington and Fairfax, has proposed a mold-breaking 1% limit on homeowner property tax in Virginia.

“This may raise some eyebrows, but this one percent limit is a solution to the complicated problem of affordable housing, and it will ensure that our area remains attractive to new home buyers and current homeowners alike,” Maddox said. “The average Alexandria homeowner pays about $800 in taxes and that cost will only go up as home prices increase. Home ownership is crucial to building strong communities, and high property taxes push working families away from the state.”

Recent analysis of the Washington, D.C., real estate market indicates that the commercial real estate market is flagging, with no new commercial construction and increased vacancies due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Maddox assesses that municipalities will most likely have to turn to homeowners for tax revenues as the market shifts.

“City governments in this area, especially Alexandria, have shown they’re not up to the task of providing basic services, such as public education, policing, and infrastructure. They will have a tough time justifying the high taxes citizens are paying for their homes,” Maddox explained. Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax’s homeowner property tax rates are currently above 1%.

J.D. Maddox is running for state delegate on a centrist platform. Voting is underway now though November 2nd. Maddox, a 20 year resident of Alexandria, is a small business owner, an adjunct professor at George Mason University and an appointed member of Alexandria’s IT Commission. Maddox served honorably as a CIA branch chief and US Army Special Operations soldier. More information is available at http://www.maddoxforvirginia.com.
