Call of Duty 2021, the next installment lined up in Activision’s flagship first-person shooter franchise, will use the Modern Warfare “I8W” engine.

This software was originally developed and released alongside the launch of Modern Warfare in 2019—later finding even more use in the company’s multiplayer battle royale, Warzone. According to VGC, this marks a distinction from the previous game which made use of the Black Ops engine. This, of course, is unsurprising as the game was titled Black Ops: Cold War.

So, what does this mean for COD WW2: Vanguard in 2021?

Reports indicate that this change could possibly stem from the immense popularity of Modern Warfare and its multiplayer counterpart, Warzone. As of December, over 85 unique million players have logged on participated in its large scale battlefield and campaign.

Vanguard will likely take after Modern Warfare in both aesthetic and handling—for better or worse. It is currently unclear whether Activision will be making revisions or additions to the engine in order to further separate the games.

Several players have taken issue with the close-door feature of I8W in the past. According to player anecdotes, the mechanic enabled opponents to camp locations and other players indefinitely. It’s always possible that Vanguard will see improvements to the series’ previous flaws.
