The long-awaited new patch for Baldur’s Gate 3 has finally arrived. Patch 5 makes a handful of bug fixes, design additions — including, erm, dick physics that make for some very realistic naked movement — and also adds in substantial companion character epilogues. And in one companion’s epilogue, Larian Studios cheekily canonized a fan-favorite character that came from a Dungeons and Dragons actual play between the Baldur’s Gate 3 cast. That’s right: Bing Bong the Imp is now officially canon.

Two months ago, the Baldur’s Gate 3 cast did a Dungeons and Dragons campaign in character, orchestrated by High Rollers Dnd. Near the very end of this campaign, around the two hour and 26 minute mark, dungeon master Mark Hulmes introduced a new character: an imp named Bing Bong.
At this point, the cast is in Athkatla hunting for clues at the Adventurers’ Mart. Bing Bong is holding the door open — actually just swinging it back and forth. He’s hard to understand, as he largely speaks infernal, with the exception of initially yelling “Bing bong! Bing bong!” Lae’zel starts to draw her sword in annoyance, but Shadowheart asks her to “investigate” something in the back of the shop, then crouches down to the imp’s height, calling him “darling, sweet imp.” She takes him in because she “likes animals” — though as the dungeon master points out he’s “not an animal.” Sadly, Bing Bong was not long for this earth, perishing (and returning to the Nine Hells) during the final battle of the cast’s Dungeons and Dragons campaign.
That didn’t stop Bing Bong from becoming a fan favorite though, as players made fan art and suggested he be added to the game. Shadowheart and Lae’zel are at each other’s throats during much of Baldur’s Gate 3, and Bing Bong became a way for fans to create a little family — just two Mothers and their terrible (wonderful) demon spawn.
Larian even tweeted, on their official account, that they were still thinking about Bing Bong.
Luckily, though Bing Bong may be gone, he’ll never be forgotten. And that includes in Baldur’s Gate 3’s new epilogue.

In Shadowheart’s companion character epilogue, which players can get to by successfully romancing her, she reflects on the group’s adventures. This includes a Bing Bong reference. IGN initially reported that it appeared specifically when Shadowheart chose not to kill Nightsong, and then in Act 2 chose to embrace Selûne over Shar.
“That stray imp that joined us. Bing Bong, wasn’t it?” she says. Long live Bing Bong!
As the new patch just came out, it’s exciting to think about what other tidbits fans will find. It’s clear Larian is paying homage to the kind of fun, goofy tangents that Dungeons and Dragons is perfect for — and Baldur’s Gate 3 is all the richer for it.
