Amazon has announced the expansion of its Prime Air drone package delivery system to international locations.

Starting in late 2024, customers in the UK, Italy, and a third undisclosed city in the US will have the option to receive their packages via drones.

The current Prime Air service, operational in the US for almost a year, has been delivering packages weighing up to five pounds within one hour.

Prime Air’s expansion will include the introduction of the MK30 drone, a quieter, smaller, and lighter model compared to its predecessors.

MK30’s innovative design allows it to fly twice as far to reach customers residing farther away from Amazon’s fulfilment networks. Additionally, the MK30 can operate in diverse weather conditions to ensure deliveries even in adverse weather.

One of the most noteworthy developments is the integration of drone deliveries into Amazon’s existing delivery network. Previously, drone deliveries were conducted from standalone Prime Air Delivery Centers.

Now, drones will share logistics space with traditional delivery vans and Flex delivery vehicles to streamline the entire delivery process. This integration aims to enhance the retail experience, create a safer and more sustainable delivery model, and ultimately provide faster product deliveries to customers.

Amazon says it has collaborated with national and international regulators – as well as communities in the EU, Italy, the UK, and the US – to ensure the safety and scalability of its drone service.

While specific cities in Italy, the UK, and the US are yet to be disclosed, Amazon expects drone delivery operations to commence in all three new locations by the end of 2024. Eligible Amazon customers will be able to opt for drone delivery and choose from thousands of items weighing five pounds or less—ranging from household products to beauty items and office/tech supplies.

This expansion signifies a significant milestone in Amazon’s commitment to revolutionising the future of retail and providing ultra-fast, same-day package deliveries.
