Air India denies retirement of Boeing 747, to remain an ‘integral’ part of the fleet

Date:

In an exclusive piece by Live from a Lounge’s Ajay Awatney, it was revealed that Air India was looking to retire its final Boeing 747 over the course of the coming week. As of yet, the 4 Boeing 747s that the Indian national airline operates are grounded in Mumbai, save VT-EVA which is in fact due to fly to Mumbai tomorrow evening.

VT-EVA is 24 years of age, and was reportedly due to join the other 3 in being parked. However, according to a statement by Air India, this may not be the case.

“It has been reported in a section of media that Air India is set to retire its Boeing 747 aircraft from its fleet & will be operating its last flight tomorrow,” the airline said. “The news is false and B747 will continue to remain an integral part of our fleet.”

Inside sources told Live from a Lounge that the airline would be retiring the type “in the next week or so”. “An official announcement by Air India is expected next week. If there will be a final passenger flight or not, is not yet disclosed by Air India,” the report continued.

Air India’s Boeing 747s have been an important part of the airline’s fleet and expansion. The plane is an iconic piece of the Air India fleet and marks the airline’s historical thrive in the aviation industry globally. However, following the carrier’s merger with Indian Airlines in 2007, it struggled significantly.

Countless attempts have been made to privatise the airline – with no success. Unfortunately, the airline is losing market share fast to its low-cost competitors, and with the COVID-19 pandemic, things are getting worse. Despite that, the 747s might be here to stay, at least for a while longer.
