Do you need Xbox Live Gold for the Battlefield 2042 beta? As the open beta is focused exclusively on the online multiplayer aspect of the game, it would make sense that players trying to take part on the Xbox would need to pay for Microsoft’s online multiplayer subscription service to do so. On the other hand, not every participating platform has to pay for online multiplayer to get into the beta. So where do Xbox users stand?

Unfortunately for Xbox users, playing the Battlefield 2042 open beta will require an Xbox Live Gold subscription. This comes from an official Battlefield 2042 FAQ published by Electronic Arts.

In that same FAQ, EA says PlayStation users won’t have to pay for PlayStation Plus memberships to play the game online. It’s unclear why the two platforms are being treated differently.

Players looking to try out the Battlefield 2042 open beta will need to connect to the internet no matter what platform they’re on, as the game won’t be playable offline.

The Battlefield 2042 beta opens to early access users — those who pre-ordered the game and those with EA Play subscriptions — on Oct. 6. That early access continues through Oct. 7. The beta then opens up to all players Oct. 8 and ends Oct. 9.

Battlefield 2042 launches Nov. 19.
