On December 1, 2021, the University of Oklahoma, Institute for US-China Issues, will sponsor a talk by me on “IPR and the US-China Tech Rivalry” from 3:00-4:30 Central Time. The program will be moderated by Prof. Timothy Hsieh of Oklahoma City University. Further information is available here.
Also on December 1, the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology concludes its four-part China IP enforcement series by discussing “China’s Role in a Global IP Strategy” with speakers from four continents. The concluding session is divided into two parts from 9:00-10:30 AM and 5:00-6:30 PM Pacific Time. The first session will include a discussion among former Chief Judge Michel, Justice Birss (UK), and Judge Grabinski (Germany). The afternoon session will include former USPTO Director Andrei Iancu, Kirti Gupta, Doug Clark (Rouse), Vivienne Bath (University of Sydney), and others. Profs. Robert Merges and Hao Yuan will moderate in the morning. Thomas Chia of VIA Licensing will moderate in the afternoon. The program should offer many practical insights on global IP enforcement strategies including handling of parallel litigation involving SEPs. Further information is available here.
George Mason University is sponsoring an academic program on December 2 and 3 on “Intellectual property and Innovation Policy for 5G and the Internet of Things.” I will be speaking with Jon Putnam and Diane Rinaldo on creating an international marketplace for SEP licensing (China-focus) on December 3. Mr. Putnam co-authored a useful article on Chinese patent quality and innovation. The two-day event has a great lineup of speakers. Further information is available here.
On December 6 at 5:00 PM, BCLT hosts Prof. Joy Xiang of Peking University School of Transnational Law (STL) as she discusses her new book on “Climate Change, Sustainable Development, and Cleantech: A Pathway for Developing Countries”. Professors Robert Merges of Berkeley, Stephen Minas of STL, and Mr. Richard Wilder of CEPI will be joining the discussion. Registration is available here.
On December 14 from 4:30 to 6:10 PM Pacific Time, BCLT concludes its four-part series “Towards a Deeper Understanding” on SEPs, with a discussion on “5G+/IoT Challenges”. Speakers include Judge Su Zhifu (retired) from the Beijing High Court, Ray Million (Harness IP, formerly of Volvo), Robert Earle of Ericsson, and others. The program is moderated by Dr. Hao Yuan. On January 14, 2022, the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology and the Sunwater Institute will be co-hosting a program on measuring IP in international trade in the Washington, DC area. The program is expected to be a hybrid event, including leading economists, trade, IP officials and scholars. Further information is available here. For those who did not attend the International Law Weekend in New York on October 29, and the discussion moderated by Prof. Martin Flaherty on “When Domestic Courts Evaluate Foreign Legal Systems: The Case of China” here is the link to the recording. We covered a range of issues with speakers from the US, Taiwan, and Australia regarding how foreign courts have been interacting with the Chinese legal system in transnational civil and criminal cases.
