Amadeus Capital Partners has hit a £110m final close for its latest early stage, deeptech investment fund.

Amadeus V Technology Fund was boosted by a cornerstone commitment by British Patient Capital, the UK’s largest investor in venture capital and venture growth opportunities.

The firm said Fund V would target seed and Series A startups “seeking to improve the way we live, work and interact through science and engineering-led innovation”.

Areas of interest include AI and machine learning, autonomous systems, human-computer interfaces, digital health, quantum technologies and enterprise SaaS and security.

The fund has been tapped for 16 investments to date, including Xampla, which looks to replace single-use and micro-plastics with plant protein material, quantum software company Riverlane and cell and gene therapy manufacturing specialist Ori Biotech.

Amadeus CEO Anne Glover said, “The UK has world-leading deep technology innovation, which Amadeus helps to propel into significant global businesses.

“Amadeus has built its reputation as a deeptech specialist investor over 23 years and, with our roots in Cambridge, London other and innovation clusters across the UK, we are privileged to have access to the most exciting and transformative startups this country has to offer.

“We are pleased that one-third of our early stage investment team are women and, as a female venture capital CEO, I am personally deeply committed to improving diversity among founders and investors in the deeptech space.

“While the UK is improving, we need more people from diverse backgrounds to be encouraged to embark on the journey from entrepreneurship to financial success and Amadeus is looking forward to backing their innovations in future.”

Judith Hartley, CEO of British Patient Capital, added, “Our cornerstone commitment to Amadeus Capital Partners’ latest fund is a key part of our strategy to invest with fund managers that can leverage the UK’s world leading position in science and engineering led innovation.”

Amadeus has raised more than $1bn of investment capital since 1997, and backed over 170 companies.

Big successes for the firm to date include cybersecurity business ForeScout, B2B online marketplace IndiaMART and speech recognition company VocalIQ.

Recent investments have included leading a £1.4m seed financing round for visual data security and privacy business Pimloc.

Video: Why professional Wall Street institutional investors in the business of making profits are not interested in your film

Wall Street investment bankers have been funding Hollywood for 100 years and remain the #1 source of VC for films.

Just ask multiple Golden Globe / Oscar-winning film producer Cecil B. DeMille & V.P. of Culver City branch of Bank of America (1924).

Even film producer / NBA sports team owner & investor Billionaire Mark Cuban says “the quickest way to get a NO answer is to say “I have a great idea””.

FYI: The word investment comes from the word VESTED; as in borrower vested interest.  Also known as ‘skin in game’.  The sweet spot is 20%.  And no; sweat equity does not count.
