Trying a “Dumb” Phone for 30 Days

Date:

It’s the 90s all over again! People are leaving social media and starting old school web pages, using non-net-connected typewriters, carrying pocket notebooks, and reading more print magazines and newspapers. And, ditching their smart phones.

In this video, documentary filmmaker, Matt D’Avella, tries using a “dumb” phone for 30 days. It’s called a Light Phone, and out of the box, it offers nothing but a phone, an alarm app, and (very slow and clumsy) texting. That’s it.

For the first few weeks, Matt found it torturous, but as you might expect, over time, he started to enjoy the break the phone gave him from all of the constant distractions of cyberspace.

The Light Phone does offer additional apps (e.g. directions, podcasts, music) and it was when Matt started adding these onto the phone that his frustrations began to mount.

In the end, he liked how the phone made him more mindful around his personal technology, but after the 30 days, he couldn’t wait to start mainlining The Spew again. Such is our data-addicted lives, I guess.
