The Razer Invitational – North America Tournament Series Set to Start in May

Date:

Razer announced Tuesday that it will host the Razer Invitational – North America tournament series. The tournament series is open to all players in North America and will start with qualifiers beginning on May 8 which will ultimately lead to three separate weeklong tournaments. Each week, gamers will have an opportunity to compete in a different title. The titles for this iteration of the series are Fortnite (PC, console, mobile), Rainbow 6 Siege (PC), and Brawl Stars (mobile). Prizes include gaming hardware and a chance to earn a share of the $30K USD total prize purse, $10K for each event.

Khang Thai, the Senior Global Esports Lead at Razer, told The Esports Observer that a multi-event, multi-title Olympic style competition is something that the company has been looking into for some time. It’s a way to invoice multiple titles across many different skill levels and demographics.

“Our global esports team was working with a lot of different esports federations in Southeast Asia and we’ve always had this vision of getting esports in the Olympics,” Thai said. “Through the launch of the Razer Invitational we have seen expansion into many areas including South America, Europe, Southeast Asia, and more. Born out of the success of last year’s event in SEA, getting federations to field teams, these types of events could eventually be Medal events.”

This Razer Invitational – North America, will provide gamers in the United States, Canada and Mexico the opportunity to gain “international recognition.” Each title will be open for players to sign up as teams, or individuals and then battle it out each week, culminating in a grand finale for each title.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the shadow cast by some of the bigger titles in esports, North America has often been overlooked as a market big enough to sustain multiple titles. However, Thai believes that now is the time to show off North American esports to a public that has already seen some titles go mainstream when traditional sports were paused.

“North America is such a big market that we haven’t touched in our rotation yet,” Thai said. “The next step in growing this IP is seeing how big we can go with more competition, bigger prize pools, and engaging new titles. In this one we have Brawl Stars, which is our mobile title and super exciting to have. I think there’s still a lot of education that needs to happen around mobile gaming and mobile esports in the West.”

Registration for Razer Invitational – North America is open.
