PlayStation Reiterates God of War Ragnarok 2022 Release Date

Be ready, boy.

PlayStation has published a list over on its official site, which highlights 22 games set to release in 2022. As you'd expect, it covers a lot of this year's big hitters, including Horizon Forbidden West, Elden Ring, Dying Light 2, Gran Turismo 7, and more. All of these titles have set release dates — but what about the currently undated God of War Ragnarok? Well, based on this list, it looks like Sony is doubling down on Kratos returning later this year, as it features quite heavily.

Now, obviously, things can change between now and...whenever Ragnarok is supposed to come out. There's still plenty of time for the PS5 and PS4 sequel to get slapped with a delay — but this at least shows that Ragnarok is still expected in 2022.

Cory Barlog Has ‘No Idea’ if God of War Ragnarok Will Come to PC

It's Sony's decision, ultimately.

God of War Ragnarok hasn't even gotten a confirmed PlayStation 5, PS4 2022 release date yet and here we are already discussing the possibility of a PC port. That's not a reflection of Sony changing its approach to porting its blockbuster titles to the personal computer, but Sony Santa Monica creative director Cory Barlog has now been posed the question. In a new interview with Game Informer, Barlog was asked if the sequel will be ported to PC sooner than four years after its PS5, PS4 launch.

He replied: "I have no idea. Right now, we're taking it one game at a time, kind of looking at each one and determining, 'Okay, is this the best thing?' And we'll gauge how it does. Do people enjoy it? Did we do it right? Is there anything we did wrong? What can we do better in the future if we do this again? But at the end of the day, ultimately, it's Sony’s decision."

See God of War PC gameplay in ultrawide trailer

God of War PC finally launches today with a raft of new features and enhancements. Overall, the team at Sony Santa Monica have done an amazing job in porting the beloved PlayStation reboot from PS4 to PC, its current OpenCritic score sitting at a whopping 94. Even if you don’t have a top range PC gaming setup, you can still get a taste of what this version of the game offers. Check out two and half minutes of God of War gameplay in ultrawide.   Here’s what Stefan had to say in our God of War PC review: God of War is a great port of one of the PlayStation 4’s biggest games. PC gamers have all of the graphics options they could really want, and the game’s origins mean that even fairly modest gaming PCs can push for high frame rates and resolutions. If you’ve not already played the game on PlayStation, this is a great chance to catch up ahead of Ragnarok’s highly anticipated release. God of War Ragnarok Naturally, the PC release has amplified the hype surrounding God of War’s sequel. Set three years after the previous title, God of War Ragnarok will find Atreus entering his troublesome teenage years – by troublesome we mean “He’s Loki” – with the duo traversing all nine realms of Norse mythology. On the way they are set to meet previous ally Freya, the chunky thicc boy Thor, both of which seem to want to have a word with Kratos for killing their sons. The stage is set for an epic conclusion to the story and one that is arriving earlier than previously planned, despite delays due to the Covid pandemic. Due to the long development time of each game it was decided to conclude the saga in two games rather than three, else fans may have to wait 15 years for the story to conclude and the dev team have been working on the same story for even longer. There’s no confirmed release date for God of War Ragnarok just yet though we’d guess it will arrive towards the end of 2022.

Small changes for the PC port are a prelude to greater accessibility in future games.

Report: The Twisted Metal reboot has swapped developers

In September last year it was reported that a new Twisted Metal reboot game was in the works and it would be a tie in with forthcoming TV show based on the game. At the time Lucid Games, the creators of PS5 exclusive Destruction All-Stars, were on developing duties. However, sources have now told VGC that the Twisted Metal reboot has been taken off Lucid and is now in the hands of a first party studio. It is suggested that the poor reception for Destruction All-Stars is a factor, but given that game died on it’s bum almost at launch it seems odd Sony have taken this long to make that decision. Which internal studio has the game has not been revealed but there are very few choices. Polphony, Guerrilla, Housemarque, Bend, Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Blue Point and Sucker Punch are all very busy with upcoming games. Team Asobi, Media Molecule, Nixxes, and Valkyerie really don’t seem a good fit, so outside of partnering with an external studio that only really leaves Santa Monica, who will be finishing God of War Ragnarok any day now. However, the game is reportedly set to be released alongside the TV show in 2023, so even if Santa Monica took over the title they would have very little time to finish it. Back in May 2019 Sony announced PlayStation Productions, a new arm of the company that would create television shows and films based on PlayStation IPs, and at the same time it was confirmed by Tony Vinciquerra from Sony Pictures that a television show based on the classic vehicle combat game Twisted Metal was in early production. The writers of Deadpool and Zombieland, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who will be creating a “new take” on the franchise.  The story will follow a loud mouthed protagonist who has a chance at a better life if he can traverse a wasteland and deliver a package, so Mad Max but with Tom Hardy talking rather than being sullen and mute. The currently unnamed protagonist will be joined by ” trigger-happy car thief” and they will meet a clown who drives an ice cream truck – I think you know who that is. Avengers star Anthony Mackie will be taking the lead role. Sone recently re-affirmed the show is in production during their CES 2022 presentation. Source: VGC

Our Most Wanted Games of 2022 – #1 God of War Ragnarok

Here we are, right at the peak of the mountain of games we consider our most wanted to see and play in 2022. In mid-December we started our sprint through our top 50 games for the coming 12 months – see our  but slowed down to better appreciate the games that made out top 5. So, what game could top Suicide Squad, the Dead Space remake, Horizon Forbidden West, and Elden Ring? Well, boy, I think you know the answer to that one already. It’s literally in the headline. 2018’s God of War found our beloved mass murderer Kratos a changed man. His days of God killing behind him and he was now living a quiet life as a family man with his wife and son, Atreus. Of course things didn’t stay that way for anywhere near long enough and shortly after his wife’s passing, father and son were off on another murder spree, this time in the realm of the Norse Gods, leading up to Æsir god Baldur getting it in the neck. That event sets off the story for the second game, Ragnarok, which will conclude the Norse story. Set three years after the previous title, Ragnarok will find Atreus entering his troublesome teenage years – by troublesome we mean “He’s Loki” – with the duo traversing all nine realms of Norse mythology. However, this may not be the story we are all imagining. Kratos decimated the Greek gods leaving barely any of them standing, but this is Ragnarok of which there are many different interpretations. In one telling, it’s Loki’s son Fenrir (and yes, his son is a wolf) that kills Odin. While previous God of War games have had sexy-time mini games that sort of thing doesn’t really get a pass these days so it’s unlikely that we’ll see Atreus in the act. So will it be up to Kratos to revert to his old God killing ways? That also seems unlikely. Sure he’s still a grumpy old curmudgeon but he is a family man more than a warrior now and the death count of Gods in the 2018 game was comparatively low. Raganrok will happen, but how and why remains to be seen, and there’s one other question: Will Kratos survive? He is an old man now and this is set to be the conclusion of the series. As we’ve seen with a certain other PlayStation series, Sony are happy to let their top developers smack a fan favourite character’s brains out with a golf club… There’s also the question of where he could go; Egypt is the obvious choice and it has been hinted at the in the games, but Egyptian mythology predates both Greek and Norse, so in theory that mythology is very much dead by the time of Ragnarok. Then again, there may be a way round that. God of War Ragnarok is set to be released in 2022 for both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, but currently has no firm release date.
