Steam Next Fest to Feature VR Demos You Won’t Want to Miss

Published

on

Steam’s winter game festival back in February was a great way to get a look at some of the exciting virtual reality (VR) titles developers are working on and next week you get to do it all again. Wednesday will see the launch of the Steam Next Fest with hundreds of free playable demos across all genres. Where VR is concerned there won’t quite be that many but some choice demos will still be available.

Sam And Max VR

Whether you’re after some comedy capers, rhythm-action mayhem or something more serious, the Steam Next Fest has most VR genres covered. Cropping up first on VRFocus’ radar was Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual!, teaming up with the crime-fighting duo to battle aliens and take on challenging police training exercises. Or for those explores amongst you how about Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder set in a dieselpunk world where you become a penniless prospector hunting for riches.

Looking for something a bit more brutal and physical? Then why not try Undead Citadel where you have to fight hundreds of living corpses with all manner of medieval weaponry. Keeping with the fighting theme whilst adding a little rhythm, Against drops you in 1930s New York to hack, shoot and slice through a noir crime nightmare. In fact, this demo is already available.

VRFocus is also looking forward to testing out Into The Darkness, a single-player action-adventure that mixes up puzzles and combat in a world with highly accurate physics. Joy Way, the team behind Against have a second title appearing in the festival, Outlier, a roguelite adventure with procedurally generated levels and RPG elements.

As for the rest which VRFocus has found:

The Steam Next Fest runs from 16th – 22nd June 2021. In addition to the free demos there will also be livestreams and chances to speak with some of the developers. For further updates, keep reading VRFocus.

Song in the Smoke.

Upload VR returned to E3 with its third annual showcase of the most inventive and intriguing games coming to VR. As the medium continues to mature year after year, it continues to be a platform for developers to innovate. While not all of the games shown were brand new announcements, we picked five of our favorites from the showcase that you can look forward to immersing yourself in soon.

Song in the Smoke

First announced for PSVR earlier this year, Song in the Smoke is a VR survival game and a departure for developer 17-Bit, better known for cartoony indie games like Skulls of the Shogun and Galak-Z. In a new developer diary, studio CEO Jake Kazdal explains how VR made him want to create not just a game but a fully living and breathing…

I Expect You to Die 2 Features Wil Wheaton, Launches This Summer

Published

on

It’s E3 2021 week so there are plenty of videogame announcements fly around including a few virtual reality (VR) ones. Today, Schell Games has announced that its escape room sequel I Expect You to Die 2: The Spy and the Liar will be launching this summer and its got some star talent on board.

The studio has revealed that I Expect You to Die 2: The Spy and the Liar will feature six globe-trotting missions to foil Zoraxis’ plans for world domination. These new missions will still feature ingenious puzzles and cunning villains just like before, the first revealed being to protect the prime minister, who happens to be attending a theatre production by world-famous actor and celebrity John Juniper.

Schell Games managed to get Wil Wheaton (Big Bang Theory, Star Trek: Next Generation) to voice Juniper while the theme song is performed by world-renowned singer and songwriter Puddles Pity Party.

I Expect You To Die 2 builds upon everything our community loved about the first game, and we’re excited to take players on another adventure filled with espionage,” said Jesse Schell, CEO of Schell Games in a statement. “Wil and Puddles have been amazing to work with, and their enthusiasm has helped us expand the I Expect You To Die universe in compelling new ways. With Wil Wheaton bringing life to John Juniper, and Puddles’s dynamic performance of the new theme song, we’re confident players will feel immersed in this rich, story-driven evolution of the original game.”

If you enjoyed the first title and you have a PC VR headset then check out the Steam Next Fest this week because there will be a free demo of I Expect You to Die 2: The Spy and the Liar from 16th June.

NERF Battles are Coming to Oculus Quest in 2022

Published

on

It’s been a couple of years since Secret Location’s last virtual reality (VR) title Transpose but the studio is probably better known for its bullet hell shooter Blasters of the Universe. For the start of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2021 today, Secret Location has begun teasing its next project, NERF Ultimate Championship.

Collaborating with NERF to bring those classic battles all kids know and love into VR, NERF Ultimate Championship is about digitally recreating that excitement pitting players against each other in team-based wars. Players will be able to select from a range of NERF blasters before heading into an arena to leap around and dodge darts in an effort to win the quick, physical matches.

NERF Ultimate Championship marks an important milestone for us as the first collaboration with our new parent company Hasbro,” said, Kathryn Rawson, VP Content, Secret Location in a statement. “Everyone on the team is excited to bring those epic Nerf battles from our childhood into the immersive world of VR and to the growing Oculus Quest audience when the game launches next year.”

Outside of the arena players will be able to customise their avatars and blasters with plenty of vibrant designs the brand is known for. NERF fans will get a chance to go hands-on with the videogame later this year as Secret Location will be hosting exclusive playtest sessions.

“We are thrilled to partner with Secret Location to take our legacy brand NERF to new heights through the immersion of virtual reality,” stated Scott Ozarski, Brand Manager, Global Brand Marketing for NERF. “It translates the imaginative play, high physicality and fun competition that characterizes the property to an all-new and exciting medium for our fans.”

NERF Ultimate Championship is going to be an Oculus Quest by the looks of it, due to arrive for the standalone headset at some point in 2022. Check out the teaser trailer below although there’s no gameplay footage at the moment. As and when further details for NERF Ultimate Championship are released, VRFocus will keep you updated.

Open-World RPG A Township Tale is Coming to Oculus Quest in July

Published

on

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2021 kicks off today and while you might be glued to some of the bigger press conferences going on there are plenty of exciting indie announcements to look out for. One of which comes from Alta, the Australian developer behind virtual reality (VR) role-playing game (RPG) A Township Tale. Previously only available for PC VR headsets, today the studio has confirmed native support for Oculus Quest is on the way next month.

The expansive co-op RPG is set in a medieval fantasy world where players can team up with eight friends on one virtual server to go on adventures whilst offering all the traditional RPG elements you’d expect. However, unlike other RPG’s A Township Tale isn’t solely focused on fight after fight, instead, creating its own little world where players can adopt professions to aid everyone else.

That means players can choose to become blacksmiths, woodcutters, miners, archers and warriors to create unique groups to head out and explore dangerous locations and find new crafting materials. This then helps everyone through the creation of new tools and weapons whilst levelling up.

All these processes are fully built around immersive control schemes so players will have to chop down trees, hammer nails, pump the bellows of the forge and handcraft weapons. All so they can venture deeper into the valleys and caves to discover new secrets.

“From the moment the Quest was announced, the requests from fans started to roll in for a dedicated version of our game, even though the thought of delivering a world as expansive as A Township Tale to a standalone device seemed crazy,” said Boramy Unn, game director at Alta in a statement. “We began the process last year, and now on July 15 we’ll be launching A Township Tale on Oculus Quest, bringing to life a fantasy we’ve had since we were children: To truly embody the RPG characters we play in a fantastical world.”

When it comes to joining friends in-game, for the Oculus Quest launch A Township Tale won’t feature cross-play support with PC VR users.

A Township Tale will arrive for Oculus Quest on 15th July 2021 priced at $9.99 USD. With that purchase players get their own server and 1,000 Talems of in-game currency to start customising their characters. Check out the new Oculus Quest trailer below and for further E3 2021 updates, keep reading VRFocus.
