Spurs Beat Hornets in Wembanyama’s Summer League Debut

Date:

The Spurs beat the Hornets 76-68 in Victor Wembanyama’s NBA Summer League debut, and the stars were out in Las Vegas to see it.

Wemby struggled in his first NBA game, scoring just nine points and shooting just 2-13 from the field and 1-6 from three. He did dominate defensively though, recording five blocks and grabbing eight rebounds.

Wemby struggled much of the game, looking jittery early. It didn’t help that every time he got the ball in the post, Charlotte double and triple teamed him.

Although he struggled, Wembanyama showed that he will be a great two-way player with his defense. He also showed great playmaking skills. He had three assists and would have had more if some of his teammates had shot the ball better.

This low-scoring game saw Julian Champagnie lead San Antonio in scoring again, this time with 20. Champagnie also led the Spurs with 6 assists.

Malaki Branham added 17 points of his own, knocking down 4 threes in the game. Blake Wesley and Dominick Barlow scored 13 and 12 points respectively. San Antonio held the Hornets to only 68 points and second overall pick, Brandon Miller to just 16 points.

The Spurs now move to 3-0 in the Summer League and 1-0 in Las Vegas.

They have a matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday July 9. Portland will more than likely be without third overall pick Scoot Henderson, who left their last game with a shoulder injury.

This game will tip-off at 7:00 CT on ESPN2.
