2024 is off to a solid start, with 12.14 million video games sold, but it’s a disappointing drop of 7.3% from last year. The European market had a fantastic 2023, so a bit of a pullback is to be expected.

EA Sports FC 24, the first EA football title without the FIFA license, has been comparable to FIFA 23 last year. FC 24 ended the month as the best-selling title overall, while The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, in second, was the best-selling new release of January. Sony’s latest exclusive marks a significant two-and-a-half times boost from the original remaster, reflecting the explosive growth of the PlayStation 5.

Bandai Namco’s long-awaited Tekken 8 is already a hit, selling over 80% more than Capcom’s Street Fighter 6 first week of release. Another new release, Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, placed in the chart at No. 9, a strong start for a title that’s a new take on a classic franchise.

Another new release would have been on the chart, Palworld, but the data only collects information from major publishers and thus missed out on the record-setting game’s explosive debut on PC and Xbox.

Rounding out the top ten are Hogwarts Legacy, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 which at this point has shown it lacks the staying power of the 2022 release, Grand Theft Auto 5, Need for Speed, and amazingly, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. The action title had a deep discount on Steam, which is also building anticipation for the Xbox-exclusive sequel later this year.

Console sales are down compared to January 2023 by only 1.4%, reflecting the increased stock of PlayStation 5 units, making it the top seller for the month. Both the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox Series consoles dipped this month.

Reflective of console sales, accessories also dropped by 1.4%, ending the month with 1.8 million sold.
