Singapore Airlines to scrap two A380s and a Boeing 777-200

Date:

Singapore Airlines current fleet of 19 Airbus A380 aircraft haven’t been flying at all over the past year and a half. So it comes as no surprise that the carrier has announced that it plans to scrap two more A380s and one Boeing 777-200. All three aircraft were recently decommissioned as part of the airline’s fleet restructuring plans and will be scrapped locally.

The four-time World’s Best Airline had already retired five A380s even before the pandemic hit, making it one of the earliest airlines to retire the aircraft type. So far five Singapore Airlines A380s, which have registrations 9V-SKA through 9V-SKE have been decommissioned from the carrier’s fleet, a process that started back in 2017. While three Airbus A320s registered 9V-SKA, 9V-SKB and 9V-SKE have already been scrapped.

Now according to a report by Flightglobal, the two Airbus A380s registered 9V-SKG and 9V-SKH as well as the Boeing 777-200 registered as 9V-SQJ will be torn down at Changi Exhibition Centre, which is also the site of the Singapore Airshow.

Other selected segments and materials such as the seats, parts of the fuselage and cabin fittings will be given a new lease of life as they will be repurposed for the carrier’s “Upcycling Project” initiative. The programme will allow the airline to provide parts and materials from “retired commercial aircraft to various Singapore-based organisations”. These parts can then be upcycled and repurposed to create unique products.

Massive operating costs compared to newer and smaller, fuel-efficient aircraft like the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, and low demand has forced airlines like Singapore Airlines and Air France to retire a number of their Superjumbos far earlier than planned and has even forced airlines to reconsider the aircraft from an operational perspective.

The lack of orders has forced the European-based aircraft manufacturer, Airbus to end the highly anticipated programme, with the last ever built A380 expected to be delivered to Emirates next month. The COVID-19 pandemic and the travel restrictions that followed were pretty much the final nails in the coffin of the largest commercial passenger aircraft in the world.
