Singapore Airlines to pilot IATA Travel Pass app

Date:

Singapore Airlines (SIA), in a media release, has announced it will be the first carrier in the world to trial the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Travel Pass app starting with flights from Singapore to London on March 15th. This app’s goal is to limit the spread of COVID-19 on flights by keeping all passengers organized regarding testing and vaccinations.

The Travel Pass app allows passengers to put their health verification information in and make the process of checking into flights simpler. They need to book a COVID test at an approved clinic and, when the results are ready, they will receive a confirmation, which they will need to present at the airport.

While this will cause some issues regarding passenger privacy, Singapore Airlines insists that all information will be private, especially considering “the highly sensitive nature of health data.” The airline hopes this is a significant leap forward to forming a “secure and convenient industry standard” with passenger health on flights.

This trial is the second part of Singapore Airlines’ digital health screening rollout as the carrier had tested a digital health verification process with flights to Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur to clear success. Other airlines, such as Air New Zealand, Qatar Airways, and Malaysia Airlines, plan to conduct trials soon.

The IATA hopes that this is a vital step towards a return to normalcy in the aviation industry after the Coronavirus pandemic severely cut demand for all airlines.
