Rex Airlines completes ‘Golden Triangle’ with Brisbane expansion

Date:

Rex Airlines, formerly known as Regional Express Airlines has only recently expanded into the Australian domestic airline using its newly acquired fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The airline, which for the best part of the last twenty years has only operated a fleet of Saab 340 turboprops on regional services, may not be the biggest player in the Australian domestic market but it is certainly making its mark.

Since March of this year, Rex has steadily increased its domestic route network and successfully driven down airfares on each of the routes it has commenced since the launch of its Boeing 737-800NG services. The regional carrier now operates a total of six Boeing 737-800NG aircraft and expects four more to be delivered during late-2021 into 2022.

Rex Airlines originally began flying its Boeing 737s on one of Australia’s busiest air routes between Melbourne (MEL) and Sydney (SYD). However, over the past six months, Rex’s domestic network has grown to include flights to Adelaide (ADL) and the Gold Coast (OOL) from Melbourne (MEL), in addition to services from Sydney (SYD) to the Gold Coast (OOL).

Earlier this week, on November 15th, Rex made the long-awaited announcement that it would be further expanding its domestic route. The regional carrier stated that it will be adding Brisbane to its domestic network and plans to connect Australia’s third-largest city with Melbourne from December 17th. Rex added that it will operate two daily return flights between Brisbane (BNE) and Melbourne (MEL) each weekday and a single return flight each Saturday and Sunday using its dual-class Boeing 737 aircraft.

Two days later, on November 17th, Rex followed up its own Brisbane expansion announcement with news that the airline will also be commencing Boeing 737 services between Brisbane (BNE) and Sydney (SYD) from December 20th. Rex stated that it will offer three daily return flights each weekday with the frequency dropping to two daily flights on the weekends.

This additional route should allow Rex to reach its original goal of flying all three “golden triangle” air routes between Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Rex Deputy Chairman John Sharp stated that he believes Rex’s new presence in the Brisbane market would help drive down airfares on both the Brisbane to Sydney and Brisbane to Melbourne routes. According to Sharp, “consumers are the big winners” from Rex’s announcement and the airline will continue to champion its cause of “safe, reliable and affordable air travel.”
