Returnal Developer Housemarque Working on a New IP

Date:

Housemarque, the studio behind Returnal, have revealed that they’re working on its next game, and its set to be a new IP.

The studio, which was aquired by Sony last year in June, has said that the game is currently in early development. Speaking at the DICE Awards, managing director Ilari Kuittinen said, “It’s early days with us starting a new game, a new IP, concepting it out.”

Returnal game director Harry Krueger expanded on the statement, saying, “At this stage, we’re quite proud of what we accomplished with Returnal, and we’re quite excited to pursue that same trajectory as a company.”

Returnal was released for the PlayStation 5 in April, 2021. Shortly after, Sony announced their aquisition of Housemarque, adding them to the PlayStation Studios division. PlayStation Studios currently has a wide variety of studios under their banner, including the likes of Guerrilla Games, Insomniac, and Naughty Dog.

Given the aquisition, it’s more than likely that whatever Housemarque’s next project shapes up to be it’ll likely be a PlayStation exclusive. Though whether it’ll be in a similar vein to Returnal remains to be seen.

Returnal is a third-person roguelike game where players take control of Selene, an Astra scout who lands on the planet Atropos in search of the mysterious “White Shadow” signal only to then find herself caught in a time loop.
