Renault is expanding its compact SUV lineup with the introduction in September of the “entry-level” Symbioz which features a full-hybrid drivetrain.
Built on an extended version of the Renault-Nissan CMF-B architecture, the drivetrain is based on a 1.6-litre inline 4-cylinder engine, topping the 1.2-litre capacity of the hybrid unit found in its sister SUV, the Austral.
Launched to capture buyers in the compact SUV segment, with families seeking spaciousness and utility particularly targeted families, the Symbioz is the French carmaker’s fourth model in this lucrative segment, joining the Arkana, the recently launched Scenic EV, and the Austral which similarly come equipped with Renault’s E-Tech full-hybrid drivetrains.
In terms of performance, the 145 hp E-Tech full-hybrid powertrain, featuring two electric motors, enables the car to achieve a range of up to 1,000 km.
Features such as a contour-lined grille reflecting Renault’s emblematic logo and an automatically dimming sunroof will, Renault hopes, add to its appeal as will a range of comfort and convenience features, including Renault’s latest Google-based OpenR Link interface and innovative safety technologies such as My Safety Switch and Safety Coach.
Competing in the lower-price segment of compact SUVs, the Symbioz runs up against rivals such as the Seat Ateca, Skoda Karoq, Dacia’s Jogger and forthcoming Bigster, Kia Niro, Hyundai Kona, Nissan Qashqai, Toyota C-HR, and the MG HS plug-in hybrid.
