RIKEN Researchers Propose Clean Qubits for Quantum Computers Using Electrons On Helium

RIKEN | Products | Robotics Today

In a new theoretical study, a RIKEN physicist and collaborators have proposed a novel approach to quantum computing, utilizing electrons floating above liquid helium as qubits. This method addresses the significant challenge faced by traditional quantum computing efforts that use electrons in solid-state crystals, which are hindered by defects and impurities. The team’s innovative solution leverages a vacuum’s pristine, defect-free environment above liquid helium, creating uniform qubits. Their research outlines how this system can realize one-qubit and two-qubit gates with high fidelity alongside a scalable method for increasing the number of qubits. This could potentially enable the creation of quantum computers with over 10 million qubits in a compact area, promising a significant leap forward in computing power capable of solving complex problems beyond the reach of current supercomputers.

CNM is set to host its inaugural World Quantum Day and STEM Fest on April 4, offering an exciting opportunity for students and the community to explore careers in quantum technology and other STEM fields. The event will feature mobile quantum lab experiences, including the Mobile Photonics Lab from Thorlabs and the SparCQS lab from Northern Arizona University, offering hands-on demonstrations of quantum technologies integral to everyday life, such as GPS, MRI, and lasers. Attendees will also have the chance to meet with local employers, learn about STEM programs and internships from institutions like CNM, UNM, and New Mexico Tech, and engage with STEM-focused student clubs. This initiative aligns with a broader effort to develop a skilled quantum workforce in New Mexico, supported by recent Congressional funding of $862,000 for a Quantum Science Laboratory at CNM in partnership with Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico.

In March 2024, the quantum computing sector is highlighted as a burgeoning field with significant investment potential, emphasized by recommendations for stocks like IonQ, Rigetti Computing, and IBM, highlights a recent Investor Place article. IonQ, a leader in trapped ion quantum computing, is projected to experience substantial revenue growth, with forecasts suggesting an increase to between $37 million and $41 million for the year, alongside bookings expected to reach up to $90 million. Despite anticipating an adjusted EBITDA loss, its aggressive growth trajectory and substantial bookings increase position it as a promising speculative investment. Rigetti Computing, known for its quantum integrated circuits and cloud platform for quantum algorithm development, is recognized for deploying the advanced 84-qubit Ankaa-2 quantum computer, marking it as an underestimated but potentially lucrative investment with a “Moderate Buy” rating. IBM offers a more conservative investment avenue within quantum computing. It expands its global quantum computing footprint and introduces advanced processors with a solid dividend, making it a safer but rewarding option for investors interested in the quantum computing surge.
