Apple removes Fortnite from App Store after Epic Games lowers the cost of V-Bucks

Apple has removed Fortnite from the App Store after the game’s developer announced new payment options that allow players to buy in-game credits direct from Epic Games. In response, Epic has taken legal action and filed a lawsuit in the District Court of Northern California to end Apple’s anti-competitive restrictions on mobile device marketplaces.

The new payment option appears to skirt Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store rules, which require Epic to give up a 30% cut of the revenue made through the app.

In announcement on its website, Epic dropped the price of Fortnite by 20% savings on V-Bucks and real-money offers for every purchase on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Mac, and on mobile when using select payment methods.

Epic offers the V-Bucks and real-money at new prices discounted up to 20% on console and PC/Mac. On mobile, gamers can select Epic direct payment to get your new discount. The discount is currently apply to US customers and not yet available in all countries. Epic plans to make the savings available in other countries very soon.

Below is how Epic describes the savings.

Starting today, any V-Bucks or real-money offers you purchase on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Mac are now discounted by up to 20%. You don’t need to do anything!

Today, we’re also introducing a new way to pay on iOS and Android: Epic direct payment. When you choose to use Epic direct payments, you save up to 20% as Epic passes along payment processing savings to you.

Epic direct pay on Apple App Store

Epic direct pay on Google Play Store

Choose Epic direct payment to get the best deal on V-Bucks and real-money purchases.

Currently, when using Apple and Google payment options, Apple and Google collect a 30% fee, and the up to 20% price drop does not apply. If Apple or Google lower their fees on payments in the future, Epic will pass along the savings to you.

Founded in 1991 by Mark Rein and Tim Sweeney, Epic operates Fortnite, one of the world’s largest games with over 350 million accounts and 2.5 billion friend connections. Epic also develops Unreal Engine, which powers the world’s leading games and is also adopted across industries such as film and television, architecture, automotive, manufacturing, and simulation. Through Unreal Engine, Epic Games Store, and Epic Online Services, Epic provides an end-to-end digital ecosystem for developers and creators to build, distribute, and operate games and other content.

Another Steam Game Festival Is Coming In October

The Steam Game Festival may be the only gaming-related show to have added extra dates instead of cancelling this year–and Geoff Keighley has just announced yet another edition of the online-only game festival will be gracing our screens before the end of the year.

The very first iteration of the Steam Game Festival was launched to coincide with Keighley’s Game Awards in December 2019, with the idea being to replicate the concept of a physical trade show even before the pandemic made such online events a necessity. Two more of the online events ran this year, with the first running when GDC should have taken place in March, and the Summer Game Festival running in June when E3 would have happened.

Now, the Steam Fall Games Festival will run from October 7 to 13, giving Steam users a chance to play free demos of upcoming games–usually comprised of games which are planning to release on Steam within the next year.

While nothing has yet been announced about the fate of Keighley’s Game Awards for 2020, we may get yet another iteration of the Steam Game Festival running alongside that event in December again this year.
