PBKS decided to bat after winning the toss. CSK made a few adjustments to their lineup, bringing in Richard Gleeson. 

However, Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande did not appear for them. 

Bright innings start for CSK 

CSK’s innings began brightly, with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane forming a solid opening stand. Initially, they were cautious and took their time settling in, occasionally establishing boundaries. 

In the second over, Gaikwad smashed one above the slips and towards third man for his 50th four of the IPL 2024. CSK motored along nicely, rotating strike, 

But the real highlight of the powerplay came in the penultimate over, when Sam Curran came on to bowl. The final four balls of the powerplay were fours, with the first being leg-byes. 

Rahane showed amazing class by hitting it through midwicket and off-side on the last three balls to score fours. . 

CSK finished the powerplay at 55 for no loss, a fantastic start. 

Then came a period in which PBKS regained control. All thanks to some tight bowling from their spinners Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar. 

In the next eight overs, PBKS did not surrender a boundary and took three wickets. CSK scored 45 runs in this phase. 

Brar opened with a five-run over in the eighth, and Chahar supported him by conceding only four.

TATA IPL match highlights: Ninth over was pivotal for PBKS. 

Rahane (29 off 24 balls) attempted to slog one to mid-wicket but only gained elevation and was caught in the deep. 

Shivam Dube, a big-hitter, came in at No. 3 and was disqualified leg-before on his first legal pitch while attempting to sweep.

Chahar swung one back into Ravindra Jadeja in the next over, trapping him leg-before for two runs. 

This forced CSK to name Sameer Rizvi as the Impact Player in place of Rahane. 

At the halfway point, they were 71 for three. 

CSK struggled in the following few overs, with PBKS maintaining good channels. 

CSK’s boundary drought ended when Harshal Patel began his session with five wides in the 15th over. The first boundary off the bat in nine overs came in the 16th, when Rizvi edged one past the wicketkeeper for four. 

Rabada removed him on the following ball, as he uppercut one to third-man, where Harshal made an excellent catch. 

CSK needed a boost at the end and received one from Gaikwad, who attacked Curran in the 17th over. The first ball received a no-ball for height and went through the off-side for four. 

The free-hit was hammered for six over long-on. The final ball was crushed through the leg side for a big six.

Gaikwad scored another half-century in the event. 

Moeen Ali chipped in with a four and a six off Arshdeep Singh before the left-armer returned to dismiss Gaikwad for 62. 

MS Dhoni went into a customary fanfare and had to battle with Chahar, who bowled the nineteenth over. 

The leg-spinner kept it very tight, giving away only three runs and dismissing Moeen. 

Chahar ended his spell at two for 16. 

The last over saw Dhoni hit a four through the off-side and smash a huge six over cover. 

However, he was run-out off the last ball as he attempted a second run – the first time he has been dismissed this year. 

In chase of 163, PBKS appeared in command from the start. 

It got tougher for CSK right away when Deepak Chahar went off the pitch after bowling the first two balls of the innings due to an injury. 

Prabhsimran Singh began his batting aggressively, blasting sixes and fours. 

Fourth over: TATA IPL match highlights

Gleeson, who was making his IPL debut, made the initial breakthrough for CSK in the fourth over. Then followed the cooperation, which laid the groundwork for a successful run-chase. 

Johnny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw added 64 runs off only 37 balls. By attacking CSK’s bowling, they put themselves in control. The shots were free-flowing and forceful. 

CSK tried rotating their bowlers to keep the hitters from settling in, but Bairstow and Rossouw still managed to hit at least one boundary in every over. 

The stand ended when Dube struck with his second ball, tricking Bairstow (46 off 30 balls) into playing an uppercut into Dhoni’s hands. 

Rossouw continued to attack after that, scoring two sixes. However, in the 12th over, he edged a full-toss from Shardul Thakur onto his stumps for 43. In 12 overs, PBKS were 113 for three and on track. 

Shashank Singh and Sam Curran joined forces and quietly knocked out the remaining runs. 

Curran stayed unbeaten on 26 while Shashank concluded on 25 not out. 

PBKS won with 13 balls remaining.
