The class-based multiplayer shooter features a variety of game modes and characters, including a giant sentient mushroom.

Impulse Gear, the developer behind the sci-fi action/adventure VR game Farpoint, today revealed its latest project, Larcenauts, an Overwatch-like multiplayer shooter that will have two teams of six going head-to-head in a variety of fast-paced game modes using an arsenal of futuristic weaponry and powerful abilities.

According to an Oculus blog post, Larcenauts will feature eight playable characters at launch, each with their own unique set of skills and weaponry based on their respective class.

• Evander (Hunter) – Sharpshooter specializing in long-range combat.
• Calima (Infiltrator) – A high-speed infiltrator equipped with reality-bending quantum technology.
• Chi (Medic) – A powerful medic shrouded in mystery.
• Salters (Grenadier) – A galactic space miner with an affinity for high explosives.
• Thal (Guardian) – An adorable robot built to defend and suppress.
• Bosun (Engineer) – Chief engineer and skilled cook.
• Vod (Brawler) – A giant sentient mushroom specializing in hand-to-hand combat.
• ARC-L6 (Commando) – A skilled combat droid armed with devastating plasma tech.

Each of the above-mentioned Specialists comes equipped with their own personal Quick Skill and Deployed Item. Calima, for instance, has the ability to make small quantum jumps to avoid enemy fire, while Thal is cabale of generating 306-degree shields. As you continue to play you’ll earn Power Slates which can be used to upgrade various character skills. There are also customizable weapon loadouts as well as additional character skins designed to help set you apart on the battlefield.

In addition to standard Team Deathmatch, Larcenauts will feature several objective-based game modes. This includes Refuel, a capture and control-style game mode, as well as Dronehack, aka capture the flag. Each of these game modes can be played across four separate maps available at launch: Relay, Excavation, Blight, and Hazardous.

Based on the trailer provided, the gameplay looks like a mix of Overwatch and Apex Legends, with players utilizing various class-based abilities to maintain control over the battlefield. Though we’ve yet to go hands-on with the game, I’m already loving the game’s stylish design as well as the unique character personalities. While existing games like Onward and Pavlov do an excellent job at replicating real-world combat, the hyper-stylized, over-saturated world of Larcenauts will hopefully offer a refreshing change of pace from the current offering of conventional VR shooters.

Larcenauts is scheduled to launch later this summer on Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, and SteamVR headsets with support for cross-play and cross-buy enabled.
