MIAMI – Surterra Wellness and Minorities for Medical Marijuana (M4MM) today announced that more than 500 patients have received medical marijuana cards through the
Safe Access initiative. The Safe Access program brings pop-up clinics to cities around the state, offering a free physician visit to patients interested in learning about and obtaining a medical
marijuana card.
Last week in Miami, Surterra and M4MM hosted their 10th clinic since their partnership began in last year. 26 patients received a medical marijuana card on-site during the Miami Safe Access clinic.
“In Florida, we’ve seen a lack of health equity across the board and as it relates to access to medical marijuana,” said
Lynnette French, Chief Operating Officer of Parallel, the parent company of Surterra. “We recognized the need to step up and advocate for patients, while also offering meaningful solutions to empower patients to get the treatment they need. Floridians
deserve safe, affordable access to legal marijuana and we are proud to help reduce the financial barriers for patients.”
Traditionally, obtaining a medical marijuana card requires paying to see a physician that is typically not covered by insurance, which makes the health resource inaccessible for many. Safe Access clinics have a doctor on site at no cost to the patient, which
amounts to hundreds of dollars in savings. Patients only pay the $77.50 required state fee for the medical card.
“Cost barriers, stigma, or fear from communities that are disproportionately targeted in the war on drugs are just some of the reasons why many in need never get access to medical marijuana,” said
DJ Howard, Program Coordinator for M4MM. “The Safe Access program is all about offering an inclusive, welcoming environment, especially for our low-income and veteran communities, so patients can get the resources and help they need.”
Low-income and veterans are served first at the Safe Access clinics, but all individuals are welcome to attend. Clinics have been held in cities across Florida including Miami, Orlando, Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Daytona.
