For the longest time, Ninja held the record for Twitch subs, but Ludwig’s month-long subathon shattered it. What began as a 24-hour stream wound up going for a full month, which has to be an overwhelming, exhausting endeavor. It’s not likely to be a feat duplicated successfully ever. Perhaps the best part is that Ludwig’s donating the money made to charity, so at least one good cause is going to see a serious windfall. But on April 13th, Ludwig’s subathon landed 269,155 subs, prompting a response from Ninja.

269,155 subs to just one channel is a monumental number. Kudos to Ludwig for succeeding in this subathon, breaking Ninja’s stranglehold on the most subs. It took the entire month, but the longer the subathon went, it became very clear that Ninja’s record would not last. Ninja’s response to Ludwig was also a classy, gentlemanly way to respond:
“Records are meant to be broken, I would be lying if I said wasn’t a little sad but congrats @Ludwig Ahgren on holding the new sub record on Twitch”
The longer this subathon went on, the more it was clear we’d see a new record. Is anyone going to conquer Ludwig’s hold on the top? It’s possible. Was it just to spite Ninja, that Twitch chat came together to sub to one channel? It could be, the community is notoriously fickle. But the knowledge that the money would go to charity also helped. If GamesDoneQuick is any indication, gamers love to come together for a good cause also.
If you expect Ludwig to do this again though, you would probably be mistaken. He doesn’t seem keen to put on a repeat performance. However, with a salute, Ludwig took to his fans to discuss it the second the big moment occurred:
“There it is, you were here, this is the new record on Twitch for most subscribers all time. Holy s**t that was insane.”
It really was insane. The idea of continuing the stream each time someone subbed turned Ludwig’s livestream into The Truman Show, only with a skilled gamer instead of an oblivious Jim Carrey. Heck, I probably even have a gifted sub to Ludwig right now. All we know for sure is that it was a momentous event, and we may never see its like again.
