But sometimes it’s equally important to look at the people behind the numbers. This week, I profile an online tutor at the leading online tutoring company, Paper, to understand how online tutoring works and to temper expectations for what on-demand homework help can accomplish. Read the column Key Findings  Paper tutors are frequently toggling among multiple students at once and are working under time constraints for essay feedback. These kinds of on-demand tutors are trained to help with small homework questions, but not in giving students more substantial lessons. Chat-based tutoring without video and audio may be less engaging for many students – and tutors. There can be long pauses between text responses.
