New Volkswagen Golf GTI to be revealed at Geneva motor show – plus new insight on the next Golf R

Date:

The new 2020 Volkswagen Golf is just about to reach showrooms in the UK, but it’s fair to say that amongst the new tech-filled interiors and mild-hybrid powertrains it’s yet to really spark our interest.

That’s about to change though, as Volkswagen gears up to expand the eighth-generation Golf with a whole range of new performance models, the first of which will arrive at the Geneva motor show in early March

> All-new Volkswagen Golf revealed – eighth generation of an icon reborn

The next Golf GTI and its diesel-powered GTD and hybrid GTE siblings will be revealed simultaneously, the first likely to feature a base power figure of 242bhp – or the same amount as the previous GTI Performance Pack.

Propulsion will likely come from a version of the same 2-litre EA888 four-cylinder engine as before, which is no bad thing as that engine is noted for its great top-end punch

The next-generation GTE (above) has already been revealed, and will match the GTI with 242bhp via an updated version of the plug-in powertrain found in the previous GTE. The GTD will also mimic the current model, with Volkswagen’s high-output 2-litre turbo diesel engine.

Official details on the rebooted Golf GTI TCR and Golf R remain unconfirmed, although both will be seen later this year, with more potent variants of the same 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the standard GTI.

Rumours have been swirling around plausible power figures for both, with a leaked image posted on social media revealing the next Golf R’s 345bhp power figure and the TCR at 292bhp, but again, these figures have not been commented on by Volkswagen.

The good news is that we won’t have to wait long to see these new iterations of Volkswagen’s iconic hot hatchback, all of which are right at the top of our hot hatch 2020 list
