Quick take:

  • Hadean has appointed Royal O’Brien as its new Chief Technology Officer.
  • O’Brien held multiple positions in the gaming and tech divisions at Amazon between 2017 and 2021.
  • He will oversee Hadean’s continued development of its spatial computing technology across commercial and defence divisions.

Hadean has announced the appointment of former Amazone executive Royal O’Brien as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The company uses spatial computing to develop tools and technology required to build metaverse experiences, including video games and virtual military training programs.

This announcement comes barely eleven months after securing $30 million in a Series A round led by Molten Ventures, with participation from Epic Games, 2050 Capital, Alumni Ventures, Aster Capital, Entrepreneur First and InQTel.

The company has sealed multiple partnerships over the past two years including multi-year deals with multi-year deals with Minecraft, Pixelynx, Sony and Gamescoin.

O’Brien brings a wealth of gaming and tech experience following his 4-years with Amazon where he headed Gaming and 3D divisions. He also previously worked at Linux Foundation, overseeing its digital media and games unit.

Commenting on his appointment, “Throughout my career, I’ve worked to shape the future of tomorrow by removing restrictions of scale and possibility and driving new levels of creativity and velocity.”

“Hadean’s technology is enabling this shift in the most powerful way and together we will work to change the future of how we collectively experience our world,” he added.

On the other hand, Hadean CEO Craig Beddis commented: “Royal is one of the pioneers and driving forces of an open, interoperable metaverse and his vision of what the true metaverse should be aligned perfectly with our own. He is an incredible addition to our team and will be instrumental in shaping how Hadean continues to bridge the gap between physical and virtual worlds in a way that is collaborative, meaningful and valuable for everyone.”

Earlier this year, Hadean and Connected Places Catapult were awarded a UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) grant to develop a digital twin of UK highways to assess how e-Highways affect the flow of traffic.
