Making Scatter Terrain for Sci-Fi Games #SciFiSunday

Date:

In tabletop sci-fi and fantasy gaming, scatter terrain refers to small collections of items or terrain features that are placed on a tabletop gaming surface to enhance the overall appearance of a game. These items can include rocks, bushes, trees, crates, barrels, and other small objects that are placed around larger items like buildings or larger natural features. Scatter terrain is used to create a more immersive and visually impressive gaming table. It also provides cover for miniatures and to block line of sight from enemy forces.

In this Bill Making Stuff, Bill sketches out some ideas for urban sci-fi scatter terrain in his notebook and then brings them to life using plastic, paper, EVA foam, and bits of trash.

One of the things I enjoy about Bill’s videos is that he is not only building the physical items for the tabletop, as he works, these items suggest parts of a story that he’s creating for a planet, a town (Respite), and its various inhabitants (e.g. the Rusters). Since I do far more modeling than I do playing, I love the idea of basically roleplaying your way through the terrain creation process.
