Kakao’s Metabora Joins Gaming Giants Ubisoft, Sega on Oasys Chain – Decrypt

Date:

Oasys, a rising gaming-centric blockchain network, has announced a new collaboration with Metabora SG, the Web3 gaming division of leading South Korean video game company Kakao Games.

The collaboration aims to “create and deliver superior blockchain games to more users,” according to a statement released by Oasys on Wednesday. It comes as part of Oasys’ “Dragon Update” plan for 2024, which focuses on expanding interoperability, growing the ecosystem, and developing quality gaming content.

“We are delighted to partner with Metabora SG, a company that fully shares our vision of revolutionizing the gaming industry through the use of blockchain technology,” said Dominic Jang, Head of Business Development and Head of Korea at Oasys, in a release.

Kakao Games is known for publishing games like Black Desert Line and PUBG (in South Korea). Parent company Kakao is perhaps best known for KakaoTalk, a popular free chat service in the country. Metabora has showcased a number of blockchain games, including puzzler Skill Blitz, golf game Birdie Shot, and role-playing game ArcheStar.

Jang stated that the partnership “marks another important milestone for further business expansion” in South Korea. Oasys also hopes to leverage its existing network in Japan to support Metabora SG’s expansion into that country.

Oasys has gained steam in recent months as the network of choice for traditional video game giants who are expanding into the Web3 world. Assassin’s Creed game publisher Ubisoft is currently building its first original blockchain game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, on Oasys. Ubisoft launched a free Ethereum NFT collection in December that ties into the game.

Furthermore, Sega is working with Japanese studio Double Jump.Tokyo to bring some of its IP to Web3 gaming via Oasys, starting with a Battle of the Three Kingdoms game. Meanwhile, gaming giant Bandai Namco (Pac-Man, Tekken) released an experimental AI-driven game on the chain last year.

Most recently, Oasys announced that South Korean mobile game publisher Com2uS will bring games from its XPLA ecosystem over to Oasys. The news preceded a jump in the price of the OAS token to a new all-time high price above $0.14 on February 13, though it has since settled to $0.12 as of this writing, per CoinGecko.
