Introducing Advancements in Weapons Detection Systems With AI

Date:

Since weapon detection systems were first invented, the technology used to detect weapons in these systems has developed vastly.

Alexander Graham Bell introduced the first weapon detection system as the “induction balance”. This electromagnetic instrument was known as the metal detector.

Technologies

Some weapon detection systems, such as metal detectors, use is electromagnetic fields to detect weapons. If metal object passes through this device, that object sets off the electromagnetic field and sounds an alarm. The downside to this technology is that these machines can only detect weapons made of metal like guns.

X-ray scanning is a technology that is used to detect weapons and is commonly used in body scanners. These devices are typically found at airports. Body scanners read radiation to identify potential threats.

Organic materials, such as fabrics, wood, water, and plastic show up on a screen monitoring system as orange. Non-organic materials, such as the same metals that would set off a metal detector, appear blue on an image. X-ray scanning technology is most commonly used at airports.

Similar to x-rays scanning, two other technologies used in a weapon detection system use the radiation from objects to identify if they could cause a threat. These technologies are called low-frequency electromagnetic radiation and passive millimeter wave imaging systems (PWWM).

Both technologies can detect weapons and other potential threats by measuring the radiation objects produce.

The difference between these two technologies is that low-frequency electromagnetic radiation emits radiation as it measures the radiation from objects. PWWM does not emit radiation.

Artificial Intelligence

Weapon detection systems are integrating artificial intelligence. Some places that have implemented this change are government buildings, larger corporations, schools in densely populated cities with higher crime rates, and public places like event venues, museums, stadiums, theaters, and hospitals.

Learning-based detection systems is one of the AI technologies that has been integrated into weapon detection systems.

This technology can identify different objects as it “learns” what guns and other weapons look like. Developers use different algorithms to help identify different objects that could cause potential harm.

Another example is AI-based computer vision systems. This technology is similar to screen monitoring systems however, it’s incredibly advanced. This AI technology is able to see different objects and alert when one of those objects could cause injury.

AI Advancements in weapon detection systems’ technologies will help to minimize potential threats and reduce injuries and deaths related to mass shootings and terrorists attacks.
