2 Pacific Pl, Palm Beach has incredible views.

The private $15m Palm Beach home of the late publican John Toohey and his wife Anne slipped quietly onto the market yesterday and already the phones have been running hot.

Alain Waitsman, of Belle Property Double Bay, said within 24 hours he and lead agent Peter Starr had received a “phenomenal number” of inquiries from locals and buyers from the eastern suburbs wanting the sheltered home with due north views over the beach.

What a view!

The interiors were designed by Frank Grill.

La Palma is protected from the northeasterlies by a bluff, has sweeping views of the coast, Barrenjoey Headland and Lion Island and is in a tiny enclave off Pacific Rd.

With interiors designed by Frank Grill, the four-bedroom, four-bathroom home with infinity pool and terrace and magnificent wine cellar and man cave has been held by the Tooheys since 2002 when the couple bought it for $4.68m.

John Toohey, who died earlier this year, was a third-generation publican who was one of the first to build large format liquor barns and he pioneered the cook your own food movement in pubs.

The infinity pool is one of the highlights.

Wake up to this!

Although not part of the famed Tooheys beer family, his grandfather bought a hotel in Glebe and his father Vincent branched out buying pubs and hotels in Sydney.

Vincent purchased in Newtown and Bondi Junction and built the Time and Tide Hotel in Dee Why.

John continued the trend acquiring pubs in Ashfield, Fairfield, Cabramatta, and Pennant Hills.

He also became involved in the Marist order at a national level supporting Catholic education for more than 60 years and was honoured with an Order of Australia for services to education.

The Toohey family has deep roots in Palm Beach.

John’s late parents Vincent and Irene owned a weekender on Ocean Rd in Palm Beach which was sold in 2016 after the death of his sister Marie who had lived there for many years.

Much of the $3.8m proceeds of that home was gifted to charity, including St Vincent’s Hospital.

It’s in “impeccable condition”.

Agent Peter Starr said the Pacific Pl house was in impeccable condition but perhaps would benefit from a redecoration rather than a renovation.

There is a stunning central staircase, formal and informal living and dining areas and the main bedroom suite has his and hers dressing rooms as well as his and hers ensuites.

The fourth bedroom could also work as guest accommodation with a private living area, ensuite and walk-in wardrobe.

The house is on 1420sqm of land and the expressions of interest campaign is guiding $15m.
