Healthcare Summit on War Zone Medicine scheduled for Kyiv

Date:

The Healthcare Summit on War Zone Medicine 2023 is gearing up to bring key opinion leaders together to discuss the hurdles of supplying healthcare in war zones.

Some of the leaders who will attend the summit include the former US Surgeon General Boris Lushniak and Ukraine Minister of Health Viktor Liashko. They will address the crowd on surgical procedures, treatments for battlefield trauma, and access to medication and medical equipment, including prosthetics.

Currently in Ukraine there is an estimated 25,000 plus amputees since the conflict began according to humanitarian organisation Nova Ukraine and around 1,600 amputees in Gaza in 2019 according to International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), 120 of which were caused from firing on the right of return protesters in the same year. Amputation will be one of the main topics discussed at the conference along with other injuries from combat.

Dr Andrii Strokan, chief clinical medical officer at Feofaniya Hospital in Kyiv, Ukraine said: “The situation in Ukraine is absolutely catastrophic. It’s unimaginable when you see 20,000 young guys without arms and legs.”

Others in attendance include US orthopaedic trauma surgeons, Dr. Dave Lowenberg from Stanford School of Medicine, Dr. Scott Levin from Penn Medicine, Dr. Tracy Watson from Saint Louis University School of Medicine, and Dr. Rudy Buntic from California Pacific Medical Center.

The conference comes on the back of a recent trip to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida where a team of Ukrainian surgeons studied advanced pain management techniques for severely wounded soldiers.
