ESL Open #233: herO, MaxPax, ByuN win

Date:

by Wax

Week #232 of the Open Cups saw herO, MaxPax, and ByuN triumph on the three servers, while the race for second place in the EPT Asia standings continued between Coffee and Cyan.

First, (Wiki)herO overtook Dark to become the winningest player in the Korean server cup, going through SHIN, Dark, Cyan, and Classic to win his 37th ever competition. While herO’s record-breaking performance took center stage, Cyan’s run to the RO4 was a key side plot. His RO4 finish earned him 2 EPT points, which narrowed the gap on current #2 player Coffee in their race for an Esports World Cup seed from the Asia region.

In Europe, (Wiki)MaxPax went on a record-breaking run of his own, setting the all-time record for most consecutive weeks with at least one server cup won. The incognito Dane’s victory over Clem in the finals put him on eight straight weeks with at least one cup victory (ten total victories as he achieved two doubles in that span).

Both MaxPax and Clem were back for more action in the Americas server cup, but it ended up being (Wiki)ByuN who came out as weekly champion with victories over NightMare, Coffee, and MaxPax in the final rounds. A pair of huge upsets occurred in the RO8 of the bracket, with Cyan taking out Clem while Coffee took down Solar. Both players ended up finishing in the top four and earning two points a piece, leaving Coffee with a 15 point lead on Cyan with one more week of EPT Cups to play before the rankings are finalized.

In non-ESL cups competition, (Wiki)Cure won Kung Fu Cup #6 (3-1 vs Spirit in the finals).
