The discussion on connectivity standards for IoT will likely continue forever, as technology continues advancing into the future. Standards like 5G, Zigbee, and Wi-Fi 6 are driving the industry forward with high-quality, trustworthy industry benchmarks for connectivity. And, according to recent releases from Silicon Labs and The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) (formerly the Zigbee Alliance), there’s a new, and powerful kid on the block in the form of Matter, which previously was known as Project ‘Connected Home over IP’ or CHIP, and is now endorsed by the CSA.
Matter was developed at Silicon Labs and the silicon, software and solutions provider says the standard is designed to provide interoperable, reliable, secure connectivity across IoT devices and networks. It reportedly simplifies product development and end-user experience through unifying connectivity protocols under one unified standard for LED lighting, smart door locks, HVAC, access control and lots of other Smart Home and Building applications. Silicon Labs says the Matter solution works in all the major connected ecosystems, including Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google.

Basically, the universal translator-style connectivity conversion standard that some of us who love simplicity have been asking for for years.
