An uproar of excitement in the Call of Duty community today, as the CDL put out a tweet stating that later in 2021, LAN matches will be returning for players. Many of the pros and players in the community are excited for this return to form as it means a return to LAN matches between players.

The Importance of LAN in Esports

LAN or “Local Area Network” for those who are unsure, is extremely important to esports as a whole. With online gaming, a lot of variables come into play, and some can make or break the game such as draw distance, frame-rate, and ping.

The return of LAN events excites the community and pros alike

For an esports match, all players need to be on the same playing field, so that they can not only play their best, but also not be held back by technical limitations beyond their control.

One such example is ping. If you’ve ever experienced lag in a game, it most likely means you have a poor ping. Playing in person over a LAN network, means that there is no mediator like an ISP or a server farm. Between you and the other player.

This gives you and the other player nearby an equal playing field, and many people partook in “LAN Parties” during the earlier years of gaming. This has been translated to esports, as LAN parties have become the standard for esports events.

Community Response

Many CDL players and pros in the community are ecstatic to find out hat they’ll be returning to LAN matches in 2021.
